Hot jazz growling swinger, sophisticated pop stylist, high-note specialist in scat and late-period phenomenon, the late Alice Babs had one of the most diverse careers of any jazz singer in the world—to which she added, in the 1960s and just for fun, singing classical music as well. Sometime during the 1950s, year unspecified, Babs studied voice at the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm, which extended her range upward by about an octave and a half, allowing her to dazzle Swedish audiences, Duke Ellington and the world with a phenomenal ability to go up into the stratosphere with the strength and purity of a coloratura soprano.

Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala offers his personal history of the music that captivated him when he was 13. "My history of jazz" takes us from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, upon which Rantala threads the album like a string of pearls, to George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Juan Tizol, Thelonious Monk and the Swedish cool jazz saxophonist Lars Gullin, alongside five original Rantala compositions. With "my history of jazz" Rantala places himself at the head of a new pianist generation that liberates itself from the inflated cult of the "all new" and instead returns to build on the old jazz tradition of studying the great inventors of the genre.

Hugely acclaimed for his remarkable grasp of melody, harmony and interpretation, Bill Evans has earned his reputation as one of the most influential pianists and composers in jazz history. Classically trained from an early age, Evans initially made a name for himself working with other famous figures of the jazz genre, including George Russell, Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker and Miles Davis, and his playing was a key feature on the latter s legendary Kind Of Blue (Columbia, 1959). By the early 1960s, Bill Evans began focussing on leading his own groups, primarily trios. Over the rest of his career, he put out a staggering body of work, including the classic albums Sunday At The Village Vanguard and Waltz For Debby (both Riverside, 1961). He received 31 Grammy nominations during his lifetime, taking away nine awards in total, and earned himself a place in the Down Beat Jazz Hall Of Fame.

The sounds on Happening hark back nearly two decades before its creator, Swedish guitarist Erik Söderlind was born—in 1981. They stem from the mid-1960s, when Jimmy Smith revolutionized the way the Hammond B3 electric organ was played and created a new genre of hard bop featuring the Hammond with guitar as second instrument. The jazz guitarists who played with Smith included Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, George Benson and Grant Green, all of whom have influenced Söderlind. The trouble back then was that even such giants tended to…

Bernd Lhotzky has been Germany’s most important exponent of classic jazz piano for the past three decades. However, his approach to music from the early days of jazz on his new solo album ‘Rag Bag’ is anything but museum-like. He says: ‘What fascinates me in music, art and life in general are the contradictions and contrasts, the syncopations, the cracks in time.’ ‘Rag Bag’ is a journey between times and worlds, a patchwork of the most diverse motifs, styles and associations. The nucleus of the album's music is Ragtime, one of the earliest forms of jazz. Lhotzky says: ‘To this day, what I love about this music is that it is so warm, life-affirming and undisguised and simply bursts with vitality and honest joy.’
