From their beginnings as an attempt at bold jazz-rock fusion in 1967 through a run as a high-powered R&B/soul-rock singles act with singer David Clayton-Thomas two years later, Blood, Sweat & Tears were always a kind of fascinating experiment, and a commercially successful one at that. The first album from the Clayton-Thomas-fronted band appeared in 1969, spawned four high chart hits, won a Grammy as Album of the Year, and went on to sell some three million units. The next two albums, Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 and 4, generated a few more hits, but the band was gradually running out of creative steam by this point, and when Clayton-Thomas left the group after the fourth album, well, that was the end of the line commercially for Blood, Sweat & Tears. A jazzier, but definitely not as commercial, version of Blood, Sweat & Tears showed up for two of the albums collected in this set, 1972's New Blood and 1973's No Sweat, with the third album here, 1976's More Than Ever, featuring the return of David Clayton-Thomas to the fold.

Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 is the third album by the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, released in 1970. After the huge success of their previous album, Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 was highly anticipated and it rose quickly to the top of the US album chart. It also yielded two hit singles: a cover of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho", and "Lucretia MacEvil". However, the album relied heavily on cover material and it received lukewarm reviews.

Blood, Sweat & Tears 4 is the fourth album by the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, released in 1971. The band invited former member Al Kooper to contribute the song "John the Baptist (Holy John)." Trombonist Dave Bargeron replaced Jerry Hyman. David Clayton-Thomas left as lead vocalist to pursue a solo career after the release of BS&T 4, as did founding members Dick Halligan and Fred Lipsius. The album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Pop albums chart.

No American rock group ever started with as much daring or musical promise as Blood, Sweat & Tears, or realized their potential more fully – and then blew it all as quickly. From their origins as a jazz-rock experiment that wowed critics and listeners, they went on – in a somewhat more pop vein – to sell almost six million records in three years, but ended up being dropped by their record label four years after that. This Dutton Vocalion's reissue combines pair of the band's later albums - "Mirror Image" from 1974 and "New City" from 1975, remastered from the Original Master tapes by Michael J. Dutton.
