After a totally groovylicious debut album that to my surprise I found to be a whole lotta fun, SWEET SMOKE officially disbanded not really taking their efforts too seriously despite there being a lot of interest in their stylistic approach. These guys were true flower children of the 60s and went as far as moving to Germany to form a commune near the city of Emmerich near the Dutch border…

Sweet Smoke Live is the third release from the progressive jazz rock band Sweet Smoke. Released in 1974 it was their second record to feature only two tracks, the first being their debut effort Just a Poke. It showcases the band's live talents with extended jamming, the guitar solos are the showcase. It was recorded live in Berlin, Musikhochschule. The last track is actually two songs that were combined during the LP engineering. The tracks were later listed separately when three additional tracks were added to the 2001 CD re-release. After the 1997 CD re-issue had already used a different cover than the original LP, the cover for the 2001 re-release was changed again, re-using the typographical design of the LP cover.

Sweet Smoke was an American music group living and playing in Europe from 1970 till 1974. Originally from N.Y. the group moved to Germany where they lived as a family commune. Within a year of their arrival they recorded their first L.P. Just a Poke which almost immediately turned them into a sort of cult icon of the underground scene which was beginning to emerge as europe's response to the american hippy scene.
An extremely resourceful and creative group, they took the art of spontaneous improvising to new heights, very often involving their audiences in their music. Words like rock jazz, acid rock, raga rock, hard rock, experimental music are only some of the words used to describe their music. Looking back one can see the early roots of fusion and new age music beginning to manifest through them.
Though the basic group consisted of 5 musicians, they came to most of their concerts with their communal family (10-15 of their friends) who helped them on and off stage to create an atmosphere of a musical happening.

I guarantee you'll love it !!

A Live that sounds like a studio record, with lots of rythm and melodic changes, very well chained. Sorry, this record is just 37 minutes long, but what for 37 minutes !

This album, like the two others of this american group (that left America for Germany at the end of the 60's), is absolutely perfect. Very very long jams (three songs only), great progressive-jazz-rock fusion style, buy it now!!! The songs progressive & transcendental structure is a warranty of orgasmic pleasure !
I regret that american people don't know this group (that's what i've been told), because it could be a revelation for most of jazz-rock fans. Moreover, i sincerely think that Phish has learned a lot from Sweet smoke, and use that in their jams.

Just a Poke is the first album by the band Sweet Smoke, released in 1970, engineered by Conny Plank.
The song Baby Night is the perfect introduction to the band, displaying their progressive jazz fusion style at the time. The song can be divided into three main sections, the highlights being the instrumental sections.

Released 26 six years after their split, this 2000 release gathers the two studio albums recorded by German-based Brooklyn progressive rock band Sweet Smoke onto one disc. Produced by Rosie Schmitz and Winifred Ebert, 1970 debut Just a Poke is an experimental affair, featuring just two 16-minute epic tracks, "Baby Night," which includes a cover of the Doors' "The Soft Parade" and "Silly Sally," which contains a five-minute drum solo. While 1973 follow-up Darkness to Light, produced by John G. Möring and inspired by a previous trip to India, features a more acoustic flavor on its six psychedelic tracks.

I've cherished Sweet Smoke's music for years - in fact, to me the music on this cd is desert island stuff. It has always amazed me that this group is so little known - little can be found in pop encyclopedias, even the older ones. And why is this? These guys produce some stunning music, an amalgam of rock, jazz, songer-songwriter stuff, and, yes, lyrics & a visual style that with some reason can be called dated.
