Though jazz may possess an abundance of youthful energy, time has proven that the masters of the art form have a level of maturity. Only a musician with a lifetime of practice and performance in that art form can master all of the profound and complex nuances of the music.

As the “Swinging Sixties” limped wearily into its final twelve months, an ambitious (but still flat broke) South Midlands rock group called Silence was preparing for one last tilt at breaking into the London gig scene. The group at this time consisted of organist Terence Verden Allen, drummer Terence Dale Griffin (Buffin), guitarist Michael Geoffrey Ralphs, bassist Peter Overend Watts and vocalist Stan Tippins. Early in May 1969 Watts spied a likely ad in Melody Maker — “Tough Aggressive bass player required for Island Records group.”

Terence Blanchard's third studio album since returning to Blue Note in 2013, 2021's Absence is an ambitious and textural production that finds the trumpeter pulling together many of the seemingly disparate stylistic threads of his career. Thematically, the album is a tribute to boundary-pushing saxophonist Wayne Shorter, whose modal-, Latin-, and fusion-informed albums, not to mention his work with Miles Davis in the '60s, has been a major influence on Blanchard.

While countless rockers started their careers in the New York suburb of Long Island before going on to worldwide success (Billy Joel, Twisted Sister, Steve Vai, Brian Setzer, Blue Öyster Cult, etc.), there have been countless acts that appeared poised for a breakthrough, but for whatever reason, fell short. Many longtime followers of Long Island-based rock would probably agree that tops on the "woulda/coulda/shoulda" list were the Good Rats, a group who played at some of the East Coast's best-known/biggest venues (Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum, the Philadelphia Spectrum) during the '70s, while opening for such big names as Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Styx, Meat Loaf, and Rush, among others…

Can you ever recapture lightning in a bottle? Pulp's eighth album—the band's first in 24 years—makes a strong case for it. Though they split up in 2002, there have been more than a few reunion shows, and staying out of the spotlight, it seems, was never really an option. "I was born to perform/ It's a calling/ I еxist to do this/ Shouting and pointing," frontman Jar vis Cocker sings on "Spike Island" (while name-checking a Mott the Hoople album, no less). Packed with punchy disco bass and comet-streak guitar—not to mention Cocker's signature yelps and exaggerated sighs, meeting at some Venn diagram of sexy, world-weary and awkward—it draws inspiration from British legend: the Stone Roses' infamous outdoor 1990 gig of the same name. That concert's taken on mythical status over the years, but in reality, Pulp guitarist Mark Webber has admitted, "it didn't sound very good, it was windy and the vibe wasn't there."
