The repertoire for string trio is comparatively narrow; however, in addition to the renowned works of Mozart, Beethoven or Reger, it also holds surprises, new discoveries and new compositions. When selecting the music for this recording, the Trio Lirico ventured off the beaten track, opening up a broad stylistic and expressive spectrum with early twentieth century works from Belgium and Hungary by Eugène Ysaÿe, Ernst von Dohnányi and Zoltán Kodály, showcasing impressionistic elements as well as folkloristic moments. A string trio by Péter Eötvös completes the programme: a haunting commemorative composition featuring a multitude of different playing techniques, modes of expression and soundscapes. The composer himself regards Trio Lirico's interpretation as authentic and exemplary.

In between the poles of preserving tradition and striving towards fin de siècle modernism, Max Reger composed three works between 1904 and 1914/15 featuring a particular sense of clarity which the composer associated with Mozart. Even at their premieres, the two String Trios and the late Piano Quartet each caused a sensation, not least as their compositional complexity, for which Reger was (in)famous, mostly runs underneath the surface, creating an easier listening experience. These tuneful and harmonically rich works which, at times, enter into direct dialogue with works of the past, are rarely heard, even though they represent important cornerstones of their respective genres.

The Trio Lirico has programmed three composers who lived and worked on the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain until 1989: for Franziska Pietsch and Sophia Reuter this is music which - paraphrasing Goethe - they "search with their souls". "As children, we both lived in East Berlin and were close friends already", Franziska Pietsch explains about her violist colleague. "We therefore share personal history, a similar style of playing and a similar non-verbal way of communicating about this music. We just feel it."

The works presented in this recording were composed between 2012 and 2013, and propose a combination of piano and strings, from cello duo to trio, quartet and quintet. Although not thought out as a cycle, these works were created simultaneously, at a time when I needed to reinforce my language while maintaining a rigorous but distant approach of a sort of aesthetic apriori declaration, musical conditioning or model, in an attempt to seek a voice, a stylistic identity of my own. The presence of the piano enabled me to override a kind of timidity that I had felt up until then towards pianistic writing.

Landmarks for Solo Violin: Franziska Pietsch's recent recording of the Prokofiev Violin Concertos with large-scale orchestra is followed seemingly by the opposite: works for solo violin. What appears, at first sight, to be a contrast is in fact a logical continuation of her extensive discography, even an enhancement: whilst in her previous releases, Pietsch demonstrated her expressive range and intensive approach both as a brilliant soloist and as an eloquent chamber musician, she now faces the greatest possible reduction, namely a solo recital. This limitation demands incredible presence, power and intensity, for which Franziska Pietsch is predestined. From isolation, she draws depth and grounding; "less" becomes "more"; soleness transforms into greatness.

Spanish music specialist and former Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Juanjo Mena continues the series La Música de España, which has seen the recording of some of the orchestral works of de Falla, Turina and Albéniz, with another important Spanish composer: Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, nicknamed after his death as ‘the Spanish Mozart’.The orchestral overture to ‘Los esclavos felices’ (The Happy Slaves) is all that remains of the opera the child prodigy Arriaga wrote aged 14.
