Lolli has received relatively little attention in modern times. I haven’t, for example, been able to trace a single reference to him in the pages of MusicWeb International. Despite this he holds a rather prominent place in that line of Italian violin virtuosi which runs from a figure such as Biagio Marini through Corelli and Tartini to Paganini and Viotti. The musicologist Albert Mell has, not unreasonably, written of him that he “was from many points of view the most important violin virtuoso before Paganini” (Musical Quarterly, Vol. 44, 1958) and Simon McVeigh (in The Cambridge Companion to the Violin) has described him as “the archetypal travelling virtuoso”.

Following our collection of German baroque virtuosic recorder concertos two years ago, a release to be described as nothing other than sensational. Michael Schneider now turns to baroque Italy. Here too there were centers such as Venice (especially at the Ospedale della Pietà with Vivaldi) and Naples where the recorder was played on a high level. On his latest production Schneider shows just what wonderful recorder discoveries can be made in Italy in addition to Vivaldi's works, which he has also presented on cpo. Various collections from Italian libraries and private inventories facilitate the treasure hunt, with works by Nicola Fiorenza, Francesco Mancini, and Antonio Piani coming to light. The Concerto in F major by Giuseppe Sammartini for soprano recorder is a classic of the literature, a genuinely magnificent Concerto for this flute type often dismissed as a school instrument. The great violin virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini offers a true find with his Concertino, recorded here for the first time.

In the 18th century, Leufsta Bruk – some 140 kilometres northwest of Stockholm – was the centre of a major industry producing iron both for Swedish needs and for export. It was a little principality in the middle of the forest governed by the descendants of Louis De Geer, the Belgian financier who had developed the ironworks. Highly cultured and musical, the family gathered together a remarkable collection of musical scores, a collection which mirrors the development of music and music publishing on the Continent, as well as the musical activities at a flourishing Swedish manor of the period.
