The fact that they, like so many late-'60s contemporaries, were molded in the image of Cream has often been cited to diminish the stature of Irish power trio Taste. But, all things being equal, it's impossible to dismiss their fine eponymous debut based solely on obvious source of inspiration, nor, by any means, the singular talents of the band's creative and performing focal point, vocalist and guitarist Rory Gallagher - barely 20 years of age upon its release in 1969.
Formed in the winter of 1968, Brainbox was a legendary dutch rock group that featured star guitarist Jan Akkerman and vocalist Kaz Lux within their ranks. The band's debut album featured such incredible work as Dark Rose, Summertime, Scarborough Fair and the epic 17 minute track Sea Of Delight. Inspired by British acts of the day, Brainbox were equal to the talent of groups such as Taste and Jethro Tull and their debut album secured a world wide release by EMI in 1969. Soon after the album appeared Jan Akkerman departed to join Focus, but Brianbox continued to record a host of classic singles and a second LP with drummer Pierre Van Der Linden also joining Focus. This Esoteric recordings re-mastered edition is the first ever UK CD release of the album and features eleven bonus tracks taken from the band single releases of 1969 and 1970.

You've got to be a Johnny Cash fan to truly appreciate what's happening on the third volume in Legacy's Bootleg series Live Around the World. This double-disc collection contains 53 tracks culled from 23 years, 1956 to 1979. The heart of its performances are from the Newport Folk Festival in 1964; a show for the troops in Long Binh, Vietnam in 1969; for Richard Nixon at the White House in 1970, and at the Osteraker Prison in Sweden in 1972…

McKendree Spring is a progressive folk-rock band, active mainly in the early 1970s. Decca really were dreadful at wasting talent. They seemed not to value anything or have any vision of acts lasting more than six months. The Zombies and Them were two bands, who were pushed too hard to the point of break up, who clearly had a lot of talent and longevity in them. This album is a very rare thing, it is a psychedelic influenced album that still sounds fresh and vibrant where others, although they may be charming, are a bit dated and irrelevant. Produced by Bill Wyman this album is full of little bits of whimsy mixed with some wonderful songs. Perhaps the Rolling Stone should have given him the same role on Their Satanic Majesties Request.
