Ten Years After A Space In Time

Although André Previn had not recorded a regular jazz album in 27 years at this point in time (discounting a pair of Itzhak Perlman sessions featuring Previn's compositions), the great majority of the performances on this trio set with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Ray Brown are first takes. Previn took time off from his busy schedule in the classical music world to return briefly to jazz, his first love. The results are often magical. Previn, Pass and Brown play together as if they had been touring as a group for years. The pianist is generous with solo space and Pass' solos are sometimes exhilarating. For Previn, it is as if the previous three decades did not occur for he plays in a style little changed from 1960, displaying an Oscar Peterson influence mixed in with touches of Lennie Tristano and Bill Evans.

… With engineering credits given to Eroc back in 1974 this album blends heavy jazz and progressive rock elements into a very captivating album. I do not really think this album fits the genre of the Krautrockers and instead feels more like Canterbury as a sub genre. Musically these guys were amazing too mixing saxes, organ, guitar with a steady core of bass and drum in support. My favorite track is the self titled Kentalope Island which creates a Sun-Ra like space vibe to the mix. A very interesting album and for those who like to explore in new directions will likely find a little relief here.

The outside packaging mirrors The Dark Horse Years but the discs housed inside the box show a greater attention to detail than the previous set: each of the albums is presented as a paper-sleeve mini-LP replicating the original album art (Extra Texture does indeed have extra texture on its sleeve), while the brief hardcover book contains perhaps the glossiest paper to ever grace a rock music box set…

This 10CD collection includes the albums Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975), No Heavy Petting (1976), Lights Out (1977), Obsession (1978), No Place To Run (1980), The Wild, the Willing, and the Innocent (1981), Mechanix (1982), Making Contact (1983) and Misdemeanour (1985). This box uses the remasters from 2007/8/9 and come with the extra tracks, so in total you get over 40 additional B-sides, live tracks and the like, over and above what’s on the standard albums.
