Tex, Don and Charlie is an Australian super group formed by Tex Perkins from The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon and others, Don Walker from Cold Chisel and widely respected guitarist Charlie Owen. Their first album Sad But True was released in 1993 with the second released in 2005. Aussie supergroup Tex, Don & Charlie have awoken from their 12-year slumber and announced their first album since 2005's All Is Forgiven, as well as a massive 20-date tour for the first time in as many years. Tex Perkins, Don Walker and Charlie Owen will be releasing their third album, You Don't Know Lonely, on 30 June and, to gear us up after so long, have released single A Man In Conflict With Nature this morning. The esteemed musicians will be heading out on a tour with the new album in hand from 23 August, where they kick off the run in Sydney before moving onto the likes of Meeniyan, Bendigo, Canberra, Bangalow, Adelaide and more.

Rock and Roll / Rhythm and Blues / Jump Blues / Doo Wop

This is an outstanding collection from the vaults of King and its subsidiary labels, Federal and Deluxe. These 24 tracks collect jump blues, doo wop, piano boogie, and outright bizarre novelties stretching from the late '40s through the early '60s. There is not a bad track on Mule Milk 'N' Firewater, featuring plenty of well-known names on mainly wild up-tempo songs by Roy Brown, Big Jay McNeely, Little Willie John, Hank Ballad & the Midnighters, and Jack Dupree. There are a few standouts amongst these rarities that may raise a few eyebrows. "Ring a Ling Dong" is from 1955 by Rudy Moore aka Rudy Ray Moore of Dolomite fame, and "Davy, You Upset My Home" finds a young Joe Tex vividly describing how his domestic situation is being torn apart by his girlfriend's unhealthy obsession with all things Davy Crockett! Unbelievable!

Artist's Choice: Lucinda Williams Review by William Tilland
Lucinda Williams is really an ideal candidate for Hear Music's Artist's Choice, and this collection has to be one of the strongest in the entire series. In her own work, Williams offers a winning and sometimes complex combination of passion, perfectionist tendencies, and poetic intelligence. Similarly, her 16 eclectic choices on this disc provide the same overall balance of wit, charm, craft, and passion, with different qualities predominating from song to song and artist to artist. While many of the participants in the Artist's Choice series choose to reintroduce us to old standards which were a part of their early creative development, Williams brings a connoisseur's ear to her assignment, and while she pays homage to a few artist from earlier decades, she selects nothing prior to the '60s (with the exception of Chet Baker's version of "My Funny Valentine," which she heard in her parents' home when she was growing up).

Great songs live forever. Whether you write 'em, sing 'em, or just love the stories they tell and the way they make you feel, make no mistake - the great ones will survive the blessed lot of us. Maurice Frawley left scores behind when he departed this world, after a short fight with cancer, in May 2009. To some folks - Paul Kelly, Charlie Owen, Tex Perkins, Tim Rogers, Mick Thomas and Don Walker for instance - plenty were already classics. For the rest of us, Long Gone Whistle is a gift we never heard coming. This triple CD set features original performances by Maurice Frawley, plus new interpretations of his songs by Adalita, Chrissie Amphlett, Sarah Blasko, Clare Bowditch, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, the Drones, Renee Geyer, Paul Kelly, the Charlie Owen & Chrissie Amphlett, Panics, Tex Perkins, Luke & Katy Steele, Dan Sultan, and many more. Many of these singers - like most of the rest of US - never had the good fortune of knowing Maurice Frawley. But his songs came from a place that we all share, both geographically and emotionally.

It was always going to be a dangerous mission. Trevor Churchill’s brainchild, THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN POP, had been in development for some time and the prototype was about to be launched into the fray with a bundle of seemingly undifferentiated repertoire. The potential embarrassment factor was high with risk of heavy flak on the way and snipers on the ground in the landing zone. Trevor was calling for volunteers. There was a lot of nervous shuffling among the ranks. Some of the lads took to studying their toecaps, while others took an inordinate interest in the state of their cuticles, or tried to look inconspicuous by melting into the background.

The first sonic blast from this Austral indie supergroup was recorded in one afternoon by members of the Scientists (Kim Salmon, Boris Sujdovic, and James Baker), Salamander Jim (Tex Perkins and Salmon), the Hoodoo Gurus (Baker), and the Johnnys (Spencer Jones). Although several hailed from remote Perth, the band was actually formed in Sydney, where all were based by the early-'80s (Perkins had migrated from Brisbane)…

Comprising additional elements of jazz and street soul, Cookin’ on 3 Burners are a prestigious R&B group hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Originally made up of Hammond organ player Jake Mason, guitarist Lance Ferguson, and drummer Ivan Khatchoyan, the trio formed in 1997 after discovering they shared similar tastes in sound and genre. The three friends decided to form the band with traditional '50s- and '60s-era jazz and soul as its foundation, unified by the eclectic and prominent use of the Hammond organ, which went on to become one of the most definitive aspects of their sound; so much so that the group was also exclusively referred to as the "Hammond organ trio."
