The Darkness Overblown with pomp and camp, English rock band the Darkness crashed the mainstream in the early 2000s, resurrecting classic rock & roll bombast and excess with their breakthrough debut, 2003's Permission to Land. Scoring armfuls of awards and chart records, the outfit imploded just as abruptly as they seemed to arrive, breaking up after sophomore release One Way Ticket to Hell…And Back. New bands were formed, rehab was completed, and old wounds were healed in the years that followed. The band reunited in 2011 and issued their comeback, Hot Cakes, in 2012. Subsequent 2010s efforts expanded their reliably raucous and nostalgia-indebted hard rock catalog, capturing fans with their theatrical live shows and devotion to excess and tongue-in-cheek humor. At the turn of the decade, they released Easter Is Cancelled (2019) and Motorheart (2021).

The Darkness is a British rock band formed in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 2000 by brothers Justin Hawkins and Dan Hawkins. Together with Frankie Poullain and Ed Graham the band recorded and released their debut album Permission to Land in 2003. Poullain left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Richie Edwards, before the release of One Way Ticket to Hell …and Back. Lead-singer Justin Hawkins announced he had left the band in October 2006.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him throughout most of his career.
