Black Uhuru - Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (Showcase reedition) (1979) REPOST

Generally acknowledged to be Black Uhuru's masterpiece as well as one of the defining documents of roots reggae, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (originally released on the Taxi label under the title Showcase in 1979, then reissued as Black Uhuru in 1980) was the first album to feature singer Puma Jones as a member of the group's vocal trio lineup, and it was also their first with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. These additions gave the group a tremendous lift: Jones' keening, almost North African-inflected voice became an instantly identifiable part of Black Uhuru's sound, and the chugging rhythms supplied by Dunbar and Shakespeare were the perfect instrumental accompaniment.

Shimmering columns of light will guide you, a grand synesthesia riding on a kaleidoscope, oscillating between hushed moments, where sound unfolds the firmament, unfurled like a cloak upon the shoulders of the real world. Listen: this is not a “track”, a circular appendage looped around a spindle and activated by some muscular stone on stylus. Too many people bled for the diamond there, too many questions remain trapped in the groove. What to do then, besides move the listener beyond the traps of expected sonics and into a menagerie, away from the strange hook of the promise of shelf-space or the obsessive atonal drone of, in fact, obsession? Here it is: live on wax, as it were, a breathing, living thing, pulsating on its own, lifting into the ether to announce itself, to nestle into the crevices of your dusty IKEA storage units. Move this mysticism in!

When B.B. King is cajoled into covering the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City," you know material's in dangerously short supply. It's the lead number on this rather undistinguished album, cut with most of his road band of the time. One staple of his live show, the sentimental blues ballad "Guess Who," came from this set.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was the most outrageous performer extant during rock's dawn. Prone to emerging out of coffins on-stage, a flaming skull named Henry his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. Hawkins' life story is almost as bizarre as his on-stage schtick. Originally inspired by the booming baritone of Paul Robeson, Hawkins was unable to break through as an opera singer. His boxing prowess was every bit as lethal as his vocal cords; many of his most hilarious tales revolve around Jay beating the hell out of a musical rival.

One of the greatest American soul music families in the history of R&B, Gladys Knight & The Pips elevated the world of soul music to higher heights through a long string of hits beginning in the mid 1960's including such classic recordings as "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Midnight Train To Georgia." The act featured the amazing Gladys Knight on lead vocals, with The Pips, who included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and their cousins Edward Patten and William Guest, as backup singers. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 1998. Presented here is a compilation of some of the legendary group's earliest recordings, recorded just a few years before they would achieve world-wide fame. Originally recorded in 1962, all selections have been newly remastered.
