The Animals

The Animals are an English rhythm and blues and rock band, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1960s. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their signature song and transatlantic No. 1 hit single, "House of the Rising Sun", as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "I'm Crying" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-orientated album material and were part of the British Invasion of the US.

Eric Burdon & the Animals were nearing the end of their string, at least in the lineup in which they'd come into the world in late 1966, when they recorded Every One of Us in May of 1968, just after the release of their second album, The Twain Shall Meet…

The Story of the Animals has been well told across innumerable books and CD compilations over the year - including Raven's own and definitive Absolute Animals 1964-1968 (RVCD-178). The task here then is not to restate the band's history, but to explore the music contained within. Gratefully Dead 1964-1968 is not a "Greatest Hits" package (as Absolute Animals most assuredly is), rather a trawl through a selection of outstanding album cuts and rare B-sides that will give even further insight into the musical depth of one of the most inventive and best loved bands of the 1960s.
