The Animals

The Weekend Starts Here. That was the invite we got when we tuned in to the best music show in the UK, nay, in the world every Friday evening from August 9, 1963 to December 23, 1966. The CD you have in your hands contains 13 tracks from the Animals on RSG, 27 tracks taken off US TV, 9 tracks from French radio, and an interview with Eric Burdon. 3 tracks from August ’65 are by The Animals Big Band; the boys supplementing their stage presence with a brass section - no British band had ever before sounded this close to an American black jump blues outfit. While The Complete Live Broadcasts I zeroed in on the songs, this set captures much of the atmosphere of the group’s live performances. The Animals created dozens of superb tracks across their singles, EP’s and albums between 1964 and 1966 but the best way to experience the group was live. This set is the nearest equivalent to actually being there.

One of the most important bands originating from England's R&B scene during the early '60s, the Animals were second only to the Rolling Stones in influence among R&B-based bands in the first wave of the British Invasion. The Animals had their origins in a Newcastle-based group called the Kansas City Five, whose membership included pianist Alan Price, drummer John Steel, and vocalist Eric Burdon.

Alexander Armstrong returns to narration in three popular classical works for children. Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67 (1936) is a 'symphonic fairy tale for children' by Sergei Prokofiev.

In late 1966, Eric Burdon put together a new line-up of the Animals, and eagerly embraced the emerging psychedelic culture. This superb compilation gathers a wide variety of their performances on stage, radio and TV from the first year of their existence, including brilliant renditions of their smash hits San Franciscan Nights and Monterey, as well as a wealth of other material.

The Animals are an English rhythm and blues and rock band, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1960s. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their signature song and transatlantic No. 1 hit single, "House of the Rising Sun", as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "Inside Looking Out", "I'm Crying" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-orientated album material and were part of the British Invasion of the US.

It’s hard to believe that the first four albums by one of the British Invasion’s best bands have never been released on CD before. But they’re finally here, gathered on ’The Animals: The Mickie Most Years and More’ box set. The five discs collect the group’s first four LPs — ‘The Animals,’ ‘The Animals on Tour,’ ‘Animal Tracks’ and ‘Animalization’ — plus a bunch of extras. There are 61 songs in all. The set, released by ABKCO Records through Real Gone Music.

John Browning ranks among the very few truly virtuoso pianists of the post-Vladimir Horowitz era. A large technique, the ability to draw a broad spectrum of colors and deep reserves of sound from his instrument, and total investment in his work marked him as one of the most important artists of his time. Among his American contemporaries, he alone sustained a career in which there was only a steady enrichment of artistry without detours caused by injury or emotional crisis. His parents were both musicians: his father a violinist, his mother a pianist. He grew up in Denver and began keyboard studies at five years of age.

Martha Argerich and Antonio Pappano (as pianist rather than conductor) lead the fun in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with members of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The entire orchestra assembles under Pappano’s baton for another of Saint-Saëns’ most celebrated works, the magnificent ‘Organ’ Symphony, No 3.
