Given all the overt literary references of Selling England by the Pound, along with their taste for epic suites such as "Supper's Ready," it was only a matter of time before Genesis attempted a full-fledged concept album, and 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was a massive rock opera: the winding, wielding story of a Puerto Rican hustler name Rael making his way in New York City. Peter Gabriel made some tentative moves toward developing this story into a movie with William Friedkin but it never took off, perhaps it's just as well; even with the lengthy libretto included with the album, the story never makes sense. But just because the story is rather impenetrable doesn't mean that the album is as well, because it is a forceful, imaginative piece of work that showcases the original Genesis lineup at a peak…

Thrash / Heavy Metal

An integral part of the early 1980s thrash metal movement, New Jersey quartet Overkill were formed in 1980 by vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson, and also included bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates (later replaced by Sid Falck). The band garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique, but lacked the musical diversity to compete with heavy hitters like Metallica; still, Overkill built up a strong following in the metal underground with albums like 1985's Taking Over and 1988's Under the Influence. Gustafson quit in 1989 following the Years of Decay album, and was replaced by Rob Cannavino and Merritt Gant…

Blues Rock / Classic Rock

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections, occasionally dipping into the epic song structures of progressive rock. The band's music was offset by Knopfler's lyrics, which approximated the winding, stream-of-conscious narratives of Bob Dylan…

Accurately dubbed "the Queen of Chicago blues" (and sometimes just the blues in general), Koko Taylor helped keep the tradition of big-voiced, brassy female blues belters alive, recasting the spirits of early legends like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton, and Memphis Minnie for the modern age. Taylor's rough, raw vocals were perfect for the swaggering new electrified era of the blues, and her massive hit "Wang Dang Doodle" served notice that male dominance in the blues wasn't as exclusive as it seemed. After a productive initial stint on Chess, Taylor spent several decades on the prominent contemporary blues label Alligator, going on to win more W.C. Handy Awards than any other female performer in history, and establishing herself as far and away the greatest female blues singer of her time. Collection includes: Koko Taylor (1969); South Side Lady (1973); I Got What It Takes (1975); The Earthshaker (1978); From The Heart Of A Woman (1981); Queen of the Blues (1985); Jump For Joy (1990).

"Greatest Hits (1980-1994)" is the RIAA Platinum-certified first greatest hits album released by Aretha Franklin since she signed with Arista Records in 1980. As it can be read in the title, it compiles her hits from 1980's "Aretha" all through her last album at the time, 1991's "What You See Is What You Sweat". Songs from her 1989 album "Through the Storm" were not included in the set, nor were either of her duets with Elton John and Whitney Houston. Songs from her second Arista set, 1981's "Love All the Hurt Away" were not included either, meaning neither the title track hit duet with George Benson nor her Grammy Award-winning cover of "Hold On I'm Comin'" were in the set. Other omissions include her hit duet with the Eurythmics' "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" and her 1983 Top 10 R&B hit "Every Girl (Wants My Guy)", produced by Luther Vandross.

Watching us from space, satellites orbit the Earth at 17,000 miles an hour, capturing images of our world that are breathtaking, and sometimes bizarre. This unique perspective reveals objects and phenomena that defy explanation - massive tsunamis that disappear without trace, a sinister blood-red lake in war-torn Baghdad and a whirlpool in the ocean the size of Connecticut.
