We are pleased to announce "Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65 (Town Hall, Amsterdam, Monterey '64, Monterey '65 & Minneapolis)." It chronicles the essential live performances of this genius of modern music as his compositions achieved a depth and complexity we would come to know as Mingus's most signature work. It includes (on the earlier recordings) the brilliant Eric Dolphy, along with Jaki Byard, Dannie Richmond, Johnny Coles, and Clifford Jordan – certainly one of the best assemblages of musicians ever. And the music, recorded across the world's concert stages and intended for release by Charles Mingus Enterprises, dashes once and for all every previously-held notion about what is, and isn't, jazz.
The tapes of these two 1964 San Francisco shows stayed locked up at Columbia Records until the label drew a double-LP from them shortly after Monk's death in 1982. Never issued on CD in the U.S., that album is now superseded by this packed document that nearly doubles its length, restores edited portions of several performances, and adds a dozen performances that sometimes better the original recordings. Monk, saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales, and drummer Ben Riley are unsurprisingly on point for the dates, which are filled with numerous classics from the Thelonious book.
Six complete performances, including opening and closing theme statements, improvised solos and six play-along tracks which feature the rhythm section without soloist.
A Night In Tunisia (Dizzy Gillespie): Classic bebop composition, alternates between Latin and swing. Autumn Leaves (Joseph Kosma): medium tempo. ’Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk): Ballad using Monk’s changes und Dizzy’s intro and coda. Lo Flame (Bill Dobbins): Based on the chord changes to the standard "All Of Me", medium fast. Embraceable You (George Gershwin): A relaxed 2-beat "walking ballad" version. Bertha The Dragoness (Jimmy Knepper): A challenging new line based on the chord changes to "Sweet Georgia Brown", uptempo.
