The more reason to release this extensive overview on which, for the very first time, songs from all their studio albums come together on the first two discs. The third disc is filled with rare live recordings, collectable b-sides and songs from front man Michael Been’s solo efforts. This 5-CD box set in ECM’s Old & New Masters series, issued in time for Charles Lloyd’s 75th birthday in March 2013, looks back at the beginning of the great saxophonist’s association with ECM. It includes the albums “Fish Out Of Water”, “Notes from Big Sur”, “The Call”, “All My Relations” and “Canto”. All five albums were recorded in Oslo (between 1989 and 1996) with Manfred Eicher producing and they chart a particularly rich and creative period in Lloyd’s musical life. “Fish Out Of Water” marked Lloyd’s comeback, after long years in retreat from the jazz scene. He was partnered by Scandinavian players who had been inspired by his trailblazing music of the 1960s and who were able both to support and challenge him.
Duke at the Roadhouse: Live in Santa Fe features clarinetist Eddie Daniels and pianist Roger Kellaway in concert performing a variety of songs by the great Duke Ellington. Also joining in on several songs is cellist James Holland. Recorded as a benefit concert for the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding, the album is a swinging and highly entertaining set that showcases the sensitive group interplay between Daniels and Kellaway. While most of the songs here are standards, the approach is anything but, and tracks like "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Sophisticated Lady" have a languid, poetic, and harmonically sophisticated quality that speaks to the high level of craft on display here. Anyone who loves these musicians will want to seek out this superb album.
