The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a musical composition for keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations. First published in 1741, it is named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may also have been the first performer of the work. The story of how the variations came to be composed comes from an early biography of Bach by Johann Nikolaus Forkel: (For this work) we have to thank the instigation of the former Russian ambassador to the electoral court of Saxony, Count Kaiserling, who often stopped in Leipzig and brought there with him the aforementioned Goldberg, in order to have him given musical instruction by Bach. The Count was often ill and had sleepless nights. At such times, Goldberg, who lived in his house, had to spend the night in an antechamber, so as to play for him during his insomnia.

For her second Warner Classics release, young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana turns to a pinnacle of the solo keyboard repertoire and a composer she has described as "my first love": Johann Sebastian Bach. Her interpretation of his epic Goldberg Variations bears out Le Monde's judgement that "Beatrice Rana certainly has nothing left to prove when it comes to technique, but what makes an impression are her calm maturity and her sense of architecture," and Gramophone's that she is "a fully developed artist of a stature that belies her tender years." Bach was the composer who most obsessed Beatrice Rana as a child, and in a recent interview with Pianist magazine, she confessed that it would be his music, and above all the Goldberg Variations, that she would choose if she had to devote her life to a single composer.

Should it be true that J.S. Bach actually composed the Goldberg Variations as a sleeping aid for Graf Keyserlingk, then Evgeni Koroliov, born 1949 in Moscow, must have succumbed to a misapprehension. The further he proceeds in the series of variations of this colossal opus, the more wide-eyed the audience turned out to be. Koroliov’s performances of Bach’s music usually arouse great excitement and his rendering of Bach’s famous Aria and 30 variations is no exception. The breathtaking intensity develops out of his natural virtuosity. Koroliov is a consummate artist and he convinces his listeners through an enormous spiritual understanding of the works he performs and in whose service he puts the wide range of his artistic and interpretive abilities.

It was with his acclaimed Chopin recordings that Pietro De Maria established his reputation, and the Polish composer makes up the bulk of his discography. Of late, he has turned his attention to Bach, and over the last two years has taken both books of the Well-Tempered Clavier into the studio (review ~ review). I was fortunate enough to review them, and each made a profound impression. He remains with Bach for his latest release, and what better follow-up than the Goldberg Variations.

In 1741, at the height of his creativity, Bach published one of his pioneering works under the modest title “Keyboard exercise comprising an ARIA with diverse variations for harpsichord with two manuals”. The title “Goldberg Variations” has attached itself to the work thanks to an unverifiable anecdote by Bach’s first biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel. This story has often led people to the misapprehension that the phenomenal work was conceived to help Count Keyserlingk drop off to sleep.
