Since his earliest solo recordings on ECM, composer and guitarist Terje Rypdal has been a musical shapeshifter, equally comfortable in the genres of modern jazz, contemporary classical, and even rock, integrating them seamlessly whenever he felt it necessary. Recorded in 2003, Melodic Warrior is a 45-minute tone poem performed by the guitarist with the Hilliard Ensemble (who commissioned it) and the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. It provides limpid vocal settings of Chippewa, Navajo, Pima, and Papago texts, adorned by widely varying orchestral textures and embellished by Rypdal's electric guitar, which alternately, swoops, soars, hums, roils, and crackles in concert with, and in contrast to, both the Hilliards and the orchestra.

ECM made history in 1984 with the release of Tabula rasa, the first of the jazz label’s equally influential New Series. Not only did this beloved recording introduce many to the music of Arvo Pärt, but it also clarified producer Manfred Eicher’s classical roots and fed into the likeminded sensibilities Eicher was then bringing with increasing confidence to his groundbreaking approach to jazz. It is therefore appropriate that Pärt, the imprint’s shining star, should be represented here more than any other composer or performer.

Since the dawn of music, composers have sought inspiration in nature. No source is more rich, dramatic, and endlessly diverse than the animal kingdom. This World Animal Day (October 4), enter a unique sonic zoo with the release of the magnificent new collection, "A Musical Bestiary." This album explores classical music's longstanding and loving gaze on animals. Experience the unexpected terror of nocturnal creatures and mythical monsters, be captivated by playful portrayals of mischievous creatures, and revel in the majestic spectacle of birds soaring through the sky and horses galloping across the land. From Saint-Saëns's famous zoological fantasies ("The Carnival of the Animals") to undiscovered gems that beautifully capture the essence of living creatures, this collection draws on music from centuries of repertoire to create a diverse and moving program. Whether drawing from folk tales, sophisticated poetry, or simply responding to vivid imagery, these composers' works powerfully demonstrate that the animal kingdom is one of classical music's richest sources of character and drama.

Gavin Bryars - Vita Nova (1994)  Music

Vita Nova includes four pieces by Bryars in which ECM appeared to be, at least partially, attempting to cash in on the new age-y vogue of the early '90s for the sort of quasi-medieval music made relatively popular by assorted singing monks, Arvo Pärt, and the Hilliard Ensemble with Jan Garbarek. Indeed, that latter group is on hand here to perform "Glorious Hill," and the results are as blandly attractive as the listener might guess given the following recipe: Take a mushily mystical text (in Latin), set to vaguely medieval sounding music, and spice with a dash of chromaticism and a pinch of minimalism. It's all handsomely produced and sung but terribly precious and overly palatable.

Two large compositions, 'Melodic Warrior' and 'And The Sky Was Coloured With Waterfalls And Angels' constitute one of Terje Rypdal's most adventurous albums. The title piece, a 45 minute epic, was commissioned by The Hilliard Ensemble and recorded in 2003 with the British vocal group and the Bruckner Orchester Linz under Dennis Russell Davies. The Hilliards sing texts drawn from Native American poetry powerfully echoing the natural world, from Chippewa, Navajo, Pima, and Papago sources, and Rypdal's sustained electric guitar lines soar melodically and dramatically above the strings' broad planes of sound.

This expertly performed "Stabat Mater" compilation includes two important 16th-century works: the Eton Choirbook setting by John Browne, a sumptuous-if-not-solemn fantasia for six-part choir; and Palestrina's serene double-choir setting, performed one-voice-per-part with improvised embellishments–as Renaissance singers commonly did. Pärt's "Stabat Mater" for vocal trio and string trio (performed stunningly on ECM by the Hilliard Ensemble and, among others, Gidon Kremer) is performed here by three voices and viol sextet. The string playing on the ECM disc was, within the confines of Pärt's somewhat abstract style, very emotional. The viols can't replicate the violin family's intense singing tone and dynamic range; consequently, the expression of grief in the music is yet more abstracted. Technically, Andrew Parrott's singers are at least equal to the Hilliard Ensemble, possibly better. Not necessarily an ideal performance, but worth investigating.
