Soft Machine were one of the very first groups to fuse Jazz with Rock in the late 60s and were hugely appreciated in Europe for their unique sound. This previously unreleased show was recorded for Germany's famous NDR Jazz Workshop series featuring the line-up of Mike Ratledge, Karl Jenkins, Roy Babbington and John Marshall with Art Themen and Gary Boyle. This long sought-after performance has never been seen since its original broadcast in 1973 and is the highest quality video document that exists of the group, featuring clear and beautiful visuals and superb live stereo sound!

Recorded live at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco, this hit album captures the bluesy alto saxophonist and his band (featuring brother Nat on cornet and Bobby Timmons on piano) during their triumphant four-week run. On Nov. 5, 1955, Billboard reported that RCA's jazz department signed Conte Candoli , Jack Montrose and Lou Levy. The move was made by Jack Lewis, RCA's pragmatic head of jazz A&R. Larger LPs meant more vinyl to fill, which, in turn, required studio pros who could get the job done in one or two takes. What's more, RCA was setting ambitious production goals for 1956, which meant a need for a longer list of releases. Discount record stores were popping up throughout the country and they had 12-inch racks to fill. During that same week, Lewis announced plans for RCA's now beloved Jazz Workshop series.

The Best Of The MPS Years presents you all the classics and highlights of George Dukes time at the Black Forest label on one album.<> <> A curious happenstance in 1966 triggered the partnership between MPS head Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer and George Duke. Brunner-Schwer was in San Francisco to record the Art van Damme Quintet. After finishing the recording session one evening, he and his team strolled over to a club called the Jazz Workshop. Les McCann was supposed to be playing, but this particular day was his day off. Instead, a 20 year old pianist, still involved in his studies, was performing with his quartet. The musics freshness so enthralled the German that he set up a recording session on the spot. This encounter between George Duke and Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer in sunny California was both accidental and noteworthy. It turned out to be the jazzy prologue to future events: five years later the American began his fusion-infused sessions for the man from Germanys Black Forest. The six albums of this series still count as a fascinating and essential part of George Dukes lifes-work and canon of the genre.

To introduce its Jazz LP series, Unique Records spent several months in the careful screening of young composers, arrangers and musicians before a final decision could be made in the ultimate selection of just the right men and material. It took only one "hearing" of The Westchester Workshop group and Unique had its inaugural album. Giving the album a title was a simple task since the sounds created here are a unique marriage between two styles of jazz.

Pianist and arranger Marty Paich gets the credit on the cover, but this 1955 album is indeed a true collaboration between Paich and his sidemen: the great trombonist Herbie Harper, Larry Bunker on vibes, Curtis Counce on bass, Jack Costanzo on bongos, Frankie Capp on drums and vocalist Mickey Lynne who sings on one track. This recording was intended to be the first in a series of albums named after the Hollywood jazz club Jazz City.
