The Man Who Bet on You

UK two CD collection from the British Indie band. Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk jazz album, they issued ten singles, five albums and various compilations between 1983 and 1993. Many of them made the Indie Chart, from early efforts with hints of Psychobilly and the Cramps to more melodic, C86-flavoured tracks (think the Smiths and the Housemartins) and later tracks with a hint of Shoegazer and Baggy about them. In Davey Woodward, the Brilliant Corners were fronted by a handsome, charismatic singer who was also a talented songwriter - and Davey's cooperated with this long-overdue anthology, helping with the track listing and supplying the entertaining sleeve-notes. This is the most authoritative Brilliant Corners collection to date, boasting all their singles on the SS20 and McQueen labels plus numerous tracks which have never before been on CD and a handful of previously unissued demos and live tracks. From every standpoint outside the financial, the Who's reunion tour in 1989 was a mistake. Yes, it was a success and millions of fans went home happy, but in retrospect, it's clear that the reunion tour – following just seven years after the "farewell tour" – tarnished the reputation of the Who almost irreparably.

As a package, the three albums contained on these two CDs offer a well-rounded picture of the Drells at the time of their Gamble & Huff days at Philly International. For starters, these records were all aimed at disco, being recorded in 1976, 1977, and 1979, respectively. It is true that most of this material doesn't match the brilliant work they did at Atlantic, but then, it's hard to dismiss any of these records out of hand. Given the pure, big string and popping bassline treatment that was so prevalent at Philly, it's easy to see why these records charted. Using the production team of McFadden, Whitehead, and Carstarphen, all three albums were aimed squarely at the charts and they all did.
