Manic Street Preachers have always been a band of very specific charms, something that has not translated outside of the U.K. particularly well. Although it boasts a generous 20 tracks, the 2002 compilation Forever Delayed isn't likely to change that situation, even if it has the lion's share of their big singles, since a band devoted to sloganeering doesn't play outside of their province, or era, without some knowledge of their context…

Manic Street Preachers have released details of their fifteenth studio album and UK tour to accompany it. ‘Critical Thinking’ is released on Columbia on 14th February 2025, and a new single featuring for the first time, lead vocals from bassist/lyricist Nicky Wire ‘Hiding In Plain Sight’ is available now (25th October). Initially inspired by a line from the poet Anne Sexton ("I am a collection of dismantled almosts"), ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’ contrasts a fearful midlife nostalgia - one in which the writer longs to “keep the curtains drawn all day” - with a gloriously uplifting melody that draws on classic ’70s rock’n’roll of The Only Ones, Cockney Rebel and the loose flow of Dinosaur Jr’s ‘Freak Scene’. Recorded at the band’s Door To The River Studio and Rockfield, Monmouth, the song features a lead vocal by Nicky Wire and added vocals by Lana McDonagh. It was produced by the band with regular collaborators Dave Eringa and Loz Williams and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (St Vincent/Wet Leg).

Deluxe three CD edition. 20th Anniversary Edition of Manic Street Preachers' seventh studio album 'Lifeblood'. Features many remastered tracks, b-sides, demos and outtakes, new liner notes by John Harris and unseen pictures by Mitch Ikeda. Also included is two brand new remixes of the lead track '1985' by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and sometime collaborator Welsh artist Gwenno. Described by Nicky Wire as "our most estranged album of all" the record came at a time when the band were reflecting on what they had become and what they could be. The band looked to the music they had liked when they were young for inspiration, New Order circa 'Low Life', Prefab Sprout 'Steve McQueen', Thomas Dolby 'The Flat Earth', early Simple Minds, and the kind of cerebral electronic pop that dominated the early-to-mid 1980s. Wire said at the time "The main lyrical themes are death and solitude and ghosts. Being haunted by history and being haunted by your own past." James Dean Bradfield commented "I loved making Lifeblood, because it was interesting. I loved chasing these other versions of what we were trying to do."

Like many long-term relationships, Manic Street Preachers benefited from some time apart, as their seventh album, Send Away the Tigers, makes plain. Arriving on the heels of 2006 solo albums from both singer/guitarist James Dean Bradfield and lyricist/bassist Nicky Wire, Send Away the Tigers finds the group recharged and revitalized, achieving the widescreen grandeur of Everything Must Go but infusing it with a harder rock edge that may not be as furious as their earliest work, but is no less committed.
