New York City has always been a hotbed for musical innovation. Each neighborhood has a unique sound of its own. However, the sounds and styles of Spanish Harlem became a music form of their own and as such, something truly special. This box set is the fruits of a massive crate digging focused on the sounds of ''El Barrio.'' The set features four distinct collections culled from Fania's massive archives and includes repertoire from other Fania owned labels such as Cotique and Speed. These chapters in Fania history feature funky Latin sounds, Boogaloo, Latin Disco and Latin Soul. Many of the tracks actually defy genre categorization as they are the perfect blend of a variety of cultures and influences. The artists featured are none less than world renowned musicians such as Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Fania All Stars, Joe Bataan, Louie Ramirez, and Tito Puente. Also included are the rare and sought after artists such as Johnny Colon, Seguida, Café, Dave Cortez and more all doing their hard to find classics. A must-have for all and a great gift for the season.

A wonderfully groovy set – every bit as great as you might guess from the title and the cover – and the very first installment in the now-legendary Mood Mosaic series! The set's one of the few to bring together tunes from the groovier side of the spectrum at the end of the 60s – work from British, French, American, and German sources – all awash in a great blend of funky, easy, and pop-oriented modes! There's a nicely trippy feel throughout – and titles include "Hascisch Party" by George Garvarenz, "Kiss This" by Claude Denjean, "Acka Raga" by Shocking Blue, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Enriquez, "En Melody" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Love For Sale" by Marian McPartland, "Batucada" by Phil Crewe, "Marins Armins Amant Ou Maris" by Michel Legrand, and "Sitar Beat" by Klaus Doldinger. © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

An entire album of JB covers sounds initially like a project which has got up on the bad foot, but this long-player from Harmless, subtitled "in the footsteps of the godfather of funk" by its compiler (respected journalist James Maycock) works on so many levels that it adds up to an essential purchase for funk aficionados. While some tracks pay homage others, like the Daktaris' "Give It Up or Turn It Loose," stray far from the original, as the bongo-rocked spoken word of the Last Poets vision encapsulates not the material of James Brown, but the man himself. Of course, despite the effort of some superb performers (Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Lou Pride amongst them), there is nothing quite like the man himself with the highlight taking the form of a spectacular 12-minute live performance of "Cold Sweat." Clyde Stubblefield and Nate Jones provide the super tight rhythm section, whipping the number-one soul brother into a twisting dervish – breathtaking.
