American jazz pianist Les McCann, was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He grew up in a musical family of four, a brother and three sisters, with most of McCann's family singing in church choirs. His father was a fan of jazz music and his mother was known to hum opera tunes around the house. As a youth, he played the tuba and drums and performed in his school's marching band. As a pianist, McCann was largely self-taught. He later explained he only received piano lessons for a few weeks as a six-year-old before his teacher died. This collection features eight original albums by Les McCann, all in remastered quality, and all spanning the golden years of McCann's musical career, 1960 - 1963, when the great man's musical potency was at its most pronounced. Featuring too accompanying musicians who made up his esteem Trio, and other notables with whom he recorded and performed. The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays No Sun in Venice (originally titled The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays One Never Knows: Original Film Score for "No Sun in Venice") is a soundtrack album by American jazz group the Modern Jazz Quartet featuring performances recorded in 1957 for Roger Vadim's No Sun in Venice and released on the Atlantic label. This recording has six John Lewis compositions that were used in the French film No Sun in Venice. The music is quite complex and disciplined, making this set of lesser interest to fans who prefer to hear Milt Jackson playing bebop-oriented blues. However the versatile group was perfect for this type of music and these thought-provoking performances reward repeated listenings.

Reissue with latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. Not Curtis Fuller in South America, but a record that picks up a very slight Latin vibe in the rhythm – which makes for a nice change from Fuller's sessions for Blue Note! The date was recorded during that great short run of soul jazz cookers on early 60s Epic Records – and is a perfect talent for the well-voiced solo talents of Fuller – which really take great fire in a group that also includes Zoot Sims on tenor, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Dave Bailey on drums. The record's got some of the gutbuckety energy of Bailey's classic sets for Epic at the same time – a strong recommendation from us – and titles include "One Note Samba", "Besame Mucho", and "Wee Dot".

If you're a blues fan chances are you're already familiar with (if you don't already own) some/many/all of these albums. But if you don't own these sets (or have only a few) this is a good way to own all 20 albums in one nice, neat box. The sound is the same as the individual albums which is very good for the various periods when these tracks were originally recorded. The jackets are fairly thick cardboard and are reproductions of the original covers. The outer box is also of good quality. There's a 34 page booklet that has a few paragraphs on each disc, and track lists, but no detailed liner notes to really put this music into some kind of perspective, but information on these artists and styles is available in various blues books/encyclopedias and on the internet.
