Without knowing or planning it, saxophonist/composer Benjamin Boone has spent his life preparing for a collaboration with Philip Levine. Long fascinated by the inherent musicality of the spoken word, Boone crossed paths with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet as fellow professors at California State University, Fresno, and they ended up working closely together in the three years before Levine's death in 2015. Boone and Levine's 2018 release, "The Poetry of Jazz," captured a genre-expanding partnership unlike anything else in the jazz canon. "Volume Two" completes the program with 14 poems and three instrumental compositions by Boone. "Boone knows where the thing called poetry lives, an ocelot among the waters, a sky-shaped Rain God that flares down upon us…He is one of the very few that can lure Phil's poetry-magic and call it out and show it to the world…Beyond words up there with the muses." - U.S. POET LAUREATE JUAN FELIPE HERRERA.

Daydreams and soothing stories…in the Spirit of Jazz "There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air wait for us. Somewhere…". These words from the classic song from Leonard Bernstein's “West Side Story” set the tone for "Fahrt ins Blaue III - dreamin' in the Spirit of Jazz": this is uplifting music, to take the mind and the soul to a place of safety. The kind of quiet interlude in a day which is always restorative. Switch off and then switch back on – better focused. We find calm, intimacy, thoughtfulness here; the sixteen tracks in this compilation have a sense of flow, while also allowing the listener to wander off into all kinds of musical dream worlds….

Christoph Irniger and a big band? Actually, one associates the saxophonist more with more manageable formats. As seen in bands such as Pilgrim, Cowboys from Hell, Noir, Counterpoints or the Christoph Irniger Trio, he prefers smaller formations, from trio to quintet, in which he brings out every voice, intention and interaction in full balance. All the more surprising now is the compactness and density he achieves in his orchestral debut, The Music of Pilgrim. The title may be confusing at first, because – although it is music by and for Pilgrim – it is not a Pilgrim album. But more about that later.

We can say without exaggeration that the new project by Nate Wooley introduces in the so-called “free jazz” format a system that few times – if ever – we encountered with such a relevance for the musical results since the harmolodic process proposed by Ornette Coleman. And the always surprising trumpeter is very much aware of the ground breaking possibilities of this band with the upcoming New York musicians Chris Pitsiokos, Brandon Lopez and Dré Hocevar, and of the music recorded in “Knknighgh” (to be pronounced as “knife”), when presenting it as «a radical new take on the classic free jazz quartet tradition». So it is: you imediatly recognize the approach as free jazz, and yet, free jazz never sounded like this before.

We want to break out of the caul. It seems almost impossible. We are surrounded by rules, restrictions, visible and invisible obstacles. We're looking around. Our fellow human beings have built into the machinery and even become so, now they are the machinery. We prayed to a good God. The answer is try the official church channels. Net is censored and the real sages are dead. You can still find two traces here and there that time has not yet won to erase, but nothing can be proven anymore. The invisible execution squad is doing a really good and thorough job.

There's the title cut: or rather, the George Shearing instrumental to which Indin has set her own lyrics, and whose title "And then I wrote" she (re)makes her own, in tribute to the female poets she has mobilised for her project. Indin's feisty words against Shearing's cool vibe create a productive tension, as the female practitioner of a male- dominated craft takes over the "master's tools", not so much to dismantle his house as to rebuild it, driven both by her need for liberation "Speak your mind, pronounce it" and by her desire for a revivification of a revered tradition "I first heard this song / I had to hum along, / N' then I wrote these lines / Substantial words that rhyme." Rather than being cowed by her great predecessors, or crushed by the continuing injustices of her age ("Bewildered as I am / In these modern times"), Indin resolves to make her mark, on the musical world and in her life as a woman and mother. Because, as she writes, "Who gives in speechless? / Careless? Wordless?" Well, not Sonja Indin, that's for sure.
