In World War II, after a period living hell on earth in the concentration camp of Dachau with other catholic priests, Father Abbé Henri Kremer gets a nine days leave to return to his home town for his mother's funeral. Along this period, the SS Gestapo lieutenant Gebhardt tries to persuade Henri, who was born in silver-spoon and member of an influent Luxembourgian family, to convince the local bishop to give-up resisting to the Germans and write a letter to the Vatican in the name of the Catholic Church of Luxemburg convincing the Pope to support Hitler and the Nazi regime. The ambivalent Henri questions himself and the bishop what he shall do.

A startling re-creation of a Nazi meeting that determined the "final solution" for six million Jews. On January 20, 1942. 14 members of of Hitler's hierarchy - leaders of the SS, the Nazi Party, Justice Ministry, industry and transport, the state apparatus and lords of enslaved territories - met in the posh Berlin suburb of Wannsee. These elite officials of the Third Reich gathered in utter secrecy for 85 minutes to discuss the ways and means, technology and logistics, of effecting the "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem."

This story of mistaken identity was taken from the experiences of writer Hermann Kant when he was a 19-year-old soldier in the German Wehrmacht. In the film, the soldier is drafted into the army just after the siege of Stalingrad in 1943 and is taken prisoner in Poland, where a mother has accused him of being the SS man who killed her daughter earlier in the war. While in prison he is given dangerous work in the prison yard but survives intact. Eventually, the soldier hears about the extermination camps of Lublin, Auschwitz and other sites, and has changed his feelings toward the army. Meanwhile, his case is coming up for review and even a jail companion from his same army unit is afraid to come to his defense because of possible repercussions.
