As the title of this package intimates, Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings (2009) contains a full run of shows at the San Fran-based Winterland Arena in early June 1977 – the 7th, 8th and 9th, to be exact. Listeners are treated to a trio of consecutive Grateful Dead performances, during one of their unquestionable zeniths as a live combo. The warts 'n' all presentation provides the further intimacy of hearing – in real-time – the crests and ebbs of each individual evening on its own or when sized up beside the other evenings. Boasting a whopping nine CDs – or ten if you count the bonus disc – there is ample opportunity to compare and contrast versions of Dead set staples.

Although St. Louis was as important to the development of late 19th and early 20th century African American music as New Orleans, Memphis, Kansas City, and Chicago, recordings by early St. Louis jazz bands appear to have been marginalized and underappreciated as reissue compilations focus mainly upon the Crescent City, the Windy City, and the Big Apple. In 1997, the Timeless label released Jazz in St. Louis, a 23-track sampling of rare wax dating from the years 1924-1927.

…This CD indeed offers a new approach to Antonio Vivaldi with recordings of absolutely rare chamber repertoire. The sonatas are for violoncello solo, but are here performed with a variety of continuo instruments: harpsichord, organ, theorbo, guitar and double bass or violone. The whole is very closely and clearly recorded, giving the listener the opportunity to savour the delightful sound combinations and the intense violoncello playing of Bruno Cocset who, although definitely an early music specialist, here reminds me of Pablo Casals in the way he invests "soul" particularly in the slower movements…

The Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra has always been a bit difficult to evaluate. Contemporary observers rated Lunceford's big band at the top with Duke Ellington and Count Basie but, when judging the music solely on their records (and not taking into account their visual show, appearance, and showmanship), Lunceford's ensemble has to be placed on the second tier…

This is a relatively new venture for the outstandingly imaginative recording outfit that is Opera Rara. The label's fifty-fourth recording sees them venturing on an uncompleted work by Donizetti, the composer they love the most. The composer had decamped from Naples to Paris when the censors, on the king’s personal instructions, banned his opera Poliuto.

Play It 'Til Tomorrow is Nick Moss' most ambitious recording project yet: two jam-packed discs spotlighting the entire width and breadth of his band's sonic attack. Longtime fans will immediately recognize the stinging electric blues sound that characterizes the first CD, but on disc two Nick introduces an 'unplugged' side that he's never before tapped in the studio. The uncommon versatility of the Flip Tops-ex-Legendary Blues Band keyboardist Willie Oshawny (who switches over to bass for four cuts and second guitar on another), harpist and fretsman extraordinaire Gerry Hundt, and veteran drummer Bob Carter - plays a huge role in the collection's extraordinary variety. Inherently grasping the value of playing as a rock-solid unit, the Flip Tops cook up steady-surging grooves while Nick's slashing guitar solos make every note count and every phrase resonate with authority. Adding to the mix are special guests Eddie Taylor Jr. and Barrelhouse Chuck.

The crusaders' dilemma is clearly exemplified in the song Seigneur, saichies by Thibaut de Champagne. "He who does not leave at once for the land where Christ loved and died, and takes the cross … will hardly go to paradise" and yet in the words of another song by Thibaut "God, why did you create foreign countries? It has parted many lovers who have lost comfort of love and forgotten its joy." There was, though, a joy greater than this: "It is good to be God's servant, and not to be touched by danger or chance; Serve well and be rewarded well." (Conon de Bethune). It is still, even at a distance of 800 years very touching to read these words and to hear these songs; they retain a strong quality, which, in these performances, is captured very well.

3CD compilation that focuses on the massive influence The Beatles had on a multitude of artists in disparate genres throughout numerous countries, right from the very start. Featuring Mary Wells, Count Basie, Cilla Black, Joe Cocker, PJ Proby, Mae West, Jose Feliciano, Jimmy James, Liza Minelli and many more. After the release of the band’s first single, "Love Me Do" in October 1962, Beatlemania commenced almost instantly and soon their own recordings, as well as covers by others, were omnipresent. In this collection we find artists from France, Holland, America, Italy, New Zealand, Hungary, and Puerto Rico, all proving that The Beatles songs were so great that it didn’t matter what language they were sung in. Sunshine pop sits next to raw soul while bluegrass nudges up against jazz. Serious British folkies mix with campy Hollywood legends as Hungarian gypsy guitar makes way for proto psychedelia – nothing was safe from the all-encompassing influence of The Fab Four!
