A temporary and partial reunion convened a year or so after the Shadows late 1960s break-up, Shades Of Rock pairs band regulars Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett with keyboard player Alan Hawkshaw and a revolving door full of session bassists - Herbie Flowers, John Rostill and Brian Hodges among them. The choice of material is interesting.

Re-forming after a four year absence, the Shadows broke into the 1970s with an almost brutal lack of restraint – and an instrumental version of the Who's "Pinball Wizard"/"See Me Feel Me," which rearranges the simplistic original with fiendish aplomb. A decade earlier, Hank Marvin was the idol of every would-be guitarist in the U.K.. By 1973, those would-bes were the hottest shots around, but Marvin wasn't even slightly phased…

By 1967, the Shadows were at the end of their hitmaking career, and very close to breaking up altogether. Before they went, however, they had one final classic to deliver, an album that arrived packaged up like a parcel, which, when unwrapped, revealed a host of solid gems, evidence that no matter how far pop music had moved from the model they helped style a decade earlier, the Shadows had no intention of being left behind…

Albums are all fine and well, but if you really want to know what made a band tick during the first half of the 1960s, you need to listen to the singles. It was singles, after all, that consumed the lion's share of the market - singles by which a band's fame and acclaim were judged, and singles by which their star rose and fell.

The Shadows are usually thought of as the quintessential British instrumental group and, along with the American band the Ventures and the Swedish group the Spotnicks, one of the most popular instrumental groups in the world. But that barely tells the story of their true significance in the history of British rock & roll – including the fact that they were the first homegrown British rock & roll band to dominate the U.K. charts, or that they weren't originally an instrumental group, either. The band's roots go back to Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in early 1958, when a young Indian-born singer/guitarist named Harry Webb joined with drummer Terry Smart and guitarist Norman Mitham to form a group that they ended up calling the Drifters. At the time, none of the records by the American R&B group of the same name, founded by Clyde McPhatter, had been released in England, so they had no inkling of the name's already being used. The band played their first performance in March 1958 at a dinner dance and, after a few weeks of local performances, they debuted at the 2I's coffee bar in London's Soho.

With the unforgetable and indestructable hits like “Apache”, “F.B.I.” etc. etc. of the “old” Shadows in mind this one is not completely my cup of tea, but for the sake of respect I have ripped it too, because many of you will appreciate it.

'The Apaches' got together due to their common interest in 'The Shadows'. All the members are seasoned musicians, have played in bands from the 60s onwards and experienced the early years of Rock'n'Roll at first hand. Now that the original 'Shadows' have completed their final tour, 'The Apaches' are keeping the music and memories very much alive by playing a string of their hits with a style and sound that is amazingly close to the original. If you liked 'The Shadows' you will also very much enjoy the wonderful sound of 'The Apaches'. Enjoy all the unforgettable instrumental hits in lossless.
