The J. Geils Band was one of the most popular touring rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, The J. Geils Band was a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with a healthy dose of Stonesy swagger. While their muscular sound and the hyper jive of frontman Peter Wolf packed arenas across America, it only rarely earned them hit singles. Seth Justman, the group's main songwriter, could turn out catchy R&B-based rockers like "Give It to Me" and "Must of Got Lost," but these hits never led to stardom, primarily because the group had trouble capturing the energy of its live sound in the studio.

When last we heard from Brooklyn composer-saxophonist Marcus Strickland, on 2016's Nihil Novi, he was testing his mettle at hip-hop-inspired production, blending genres with a little help from album producer Meshell Ndegeocello. In the process, something big happened: "I was no longer concerned about what is or isn't jazz," he says. "I got rid of those barriers and was like, 'Well, who the fuck am I?' That's when I started on this path." On his thrilling new LP, People of the Sun, Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity.

Fierrabras is a three-act German opera with spoken dialogue written by the composer Franz Schubert in 1823, to a libretto by Josef Kupelwieser, the general manager of the Theater am Kärntnertor (Vienna's Court Opera Theatre). Along with the earlier Alfonso und Estrella, composed in 1822, it marks Schubert's attempt to compose grand Romantic opera in German, departing from the Singspiel tradition.

In July 1956, Miles Davis returned to his hometown for a two-night stint at the infamous Peacock Alley in Gaslight Square. Along for the ride, were four more of the greatest jazz musicians ever, especially when taken as a whole. Nearly fifty years later, the gaslights are gone and Saint Louis locals still don't know what hit them. Peacock Alley 1956 is a CD reissue of the original AM radio broadcast. Never heard of it? That's due to ambiguous legal concerns. Miles signed exclusive contracts, making widespread marketing of such "bootlegs" impossible. Bottom line: few such treasures exist, here's your chance to own one.

The Family is the first and only album by the group who called themselves The Family. Released in 1985 on Prince's Paisley Park record label, The Family featured St. Paul and Susannah Melvoin on vocals plus Eric Leeds on saxophone. While drummer Jellybean Johnson and chaperone Jerome Benton were shown on the back cover, the majority of the music was actually played by Prince. The hit single on this was "The Screams Of Passion" but the album is also the source of "Nothing Compares 2 U", covered into a very successful hit song by Sinéad O'Connor five years later. The first song on the album, "High Fashion" was also released as a single. The group later returned as fDeluxe due to Prince not wanting them to remain The Family.
