After cutting a handful of brilliant singles for Decca in the mid-'50s, Jackie Lee Cochran became the King of Rockabilly, West Coast Division with a decade's worth of performances in barrooms up and down the West Coast. Producer/rockabilly fanatic Ronny Weiser recorded Cochran in the '70s for his Rollin' Rock label, and the best of those sides are collected here on this 20-track compilation. Cochran still had a lot of gas left in the tank when these sides were cut, and Weiser wisely kept the production simple and spartan. Highlights include a snappy recut of "Mama, Doncha Think I Know," "Hell to Pay," "Hip Shakin' Mama," and "Hug'N'Kiss Me."

Rockabilly

Essentially country music welded to jump blues, rockabilly was rock & roll’s first clear shot at the world in the late '50s, and for every huge star like Elvis Presley who passed through the genre and took it onto the charts, there were hundreds – if not thousands – of singles by likeminded artists released in the rockabilly era that vanished without much impact or became, at best, only regional successes. This two-disc, 50-track set collects some of these rare releases, and includes sides by footnote musicians like Al Epp, Jimmy Patton, Jimmie John, Jimmy Lloyd, Benny Joy, Benny Ingram, and many others with similar fame pedigrees…

Eddie Bond was a pioneer singer and guitar player of American Rockabilly music. In the mid 1950s, Bond recorded for Mercury Records and toured with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Warren Smith and others. He is most infamous for having rejected the then 18-year-old Elvis Presley, who was auditioning for Bond's band. It was shortly thereafter that Presley recorded his first single at Sun Records. Bond's contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Rockabilly's rough image can be traced to both Sam Phillips' lo-fi production ethic at Sun Records and the dangerous look of the many Elvis wannabes on the label's roster; it continued as a symbol of defiance thanks to the nouveau rockabilly look British teddy-boys sported in the '60s (greased hair, rolled-up pant leg) and the makeshift music the reconfigured teddies of punk rock made in the late '70s.

It s Saturday Night!, an exciting collection of rockabilly recordings from the same label. Starday Records was launched in Beaumont, Texas, in the early 1950s, with perfect timing to catch the first wave of the rockabilly tsunami that would sweep the Southern states of America between 1954 and 1958…and the Texas teenagers with their distinctive cat music were just as ready to rock as those being captured by Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Tennessee. A cult label for rockabilly collectors worldwide - if not the holy grail of all rockabilly record labels - Starday embraced the new teenage music enthusiastically, introducing the likes of Sonny Fisher and Sleepy LaBeef, as well as revitalising the careers of veterans such as Link Davis, Bill Mack and Leon Payne. In addition, household-names-in-waiting such as George Jones, Big Bopper and Link Wray would also cut their teeth with the little Texas label. Following the 1970s rockabilly revival, even more of these artists were to become internationally famous with their renown being directly attributable to their time with Starday/Dixie; Fisher, LaBeef, Rudy Grayzell, Glenn Barber and Joe Poovey, all enjoyed extended musical careers courtesy of their insatiable European fans, while those that were unable to tour became absent heroes whose 1950s recordings could still fill dance floors decades after they were laid down.
