Slap That Bass! is a 4cd box set that is full of the finest finnish rockabilly and 50′s style rock’n'roll. It was compiled by Mikko Aaltonen and released by Johanna Kustannus on 17th of february. I know this might not totally fall into that “finnish pop” category, but it’s an important release nevertheless. Actually it’s worthy of those onechord’s imaginary culture awards and even though I’m not a huge rockabilly fan, Slap That Bass!

Benny Joy, (real name Benjamin Eidson), was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 5, 1935 and was an American Rockabilly artist most known for his work in the 1950s. Joy wrote and recorded many of his own compositions e.g. 'Crash The Party', 'Cold, Cold Woman', 'She Cryed For Me' and 'Dark Angel'. Recording artists like Marty Robbins, Jackie Wilson, Charlie Rich, Burl Ives, Debbie Reynolds, Johnny Rivers and Carl Smith have recorded his songs. Among Rockabilly collectors Joy's recording of 'Rollin' The Juke Box Rock' is well known. Joy's band was one of the first American rockabilly ensembles to tour Europe. Benny Joy died in 1988.

Rockabilly Rebellion is an excellent summation of Ray Campi's latter-day recordings for Rollin' Rock in the late '70s, including such cuts as "Eager Boy" and "Tore Up".

Even if you’re not a rockabilly fan, you have to give Stray Cats founder Brian Setzer credit for keeping the music alive with both his 19 piece, horn blasted ensemble and the stripped down three piece featured on this show. He’s virtually the only act in the sadly under-appreciated genre that can consistently fill larger auditoriums as he displays here, packing the Japanese rockabilly hardcores into the 600 or so capacity Namba Hatch venue in Osaka for this sizzler of a concert recorded Feb.18, 2016.
