Cet album monographique publié par Deutsche Grammophon frappe fort avec cet hommage à la compositrice Sofia Goubaïdoulina à l’occasion de son quatre-vingt-dixième anniversaire. Trois œuvres récentes sont enregistrées ici, en première mondiale, par l’Orchestre du Gewandhaus de Leipzig sous la direction d’Andris Nelsons, grand admirateur de la musique à la fois intellectuelle, spirituelle et sensuelle de la grande compositrice russe. Alors assistante de Chostakovitch, Goubaïdoulina compose en 1959 une Symphonie de chambre très appréciée par le compositeur soviétique qui l’encourage à continuer dans cette voie. Mais il faudra attendre les années 1980 pour que son œuvre commence à être perçue sur un plan international, grâce à des interprètes comme Gidon Kremer, le Quatuor Arditti ou encore Sir Simon Rattle.

The Choir of King’s College London follow up on their first recording of Edward Nesbit’s sacred choral music, named a Gramophone Editor’s Choice in 2022, with Nativity, a programme of Christmas music written by the composer over the last ten years: a joyful celebration that places Nesbit at the heart of a thriving British choral scene.At the heart – but slightly to one side too. In a crowded field, Nesbit’s voice is distinctive. Expect much more fast-paced music than is the norm, an abundance of musical references to the classical canon, and frequent touches of humour. With their young, zestful performances, Nesbit’s music benefits from his close collaboration with the choir and its director Joseph Fort.

In the fat rat-infested, decrepit tenement called Heavy Rock Manor, the Virginia-based shock unit is one of the few groups striving to keep the power on and the hallways clear of gluttonous rap-rock/post-grunge False Marias. Yes, yes, Ashes of the Wake arrives via Epic Records, but this only will inflame the ire of the ignorant. For the rest of us, Lamb's ascendance to the majors melts a little more of the crap rock golden calf. Where previous efforts were fully automatic hot LZs, they were also slightly muddled for the very same reason. They fired in all directions. With Ashes, producer Machine has sharpened the corner of every riff and tightened the turns on classicist metal gallops.

Portland-based composer/pianist Ezra Weiss has composed and arranged for many albums, musicals and multi-media events and released six albums as a bandleader over the last 16 years, but had yet to present his own large ensemble recording. "We Limit…" marks that debut while offering a timely, impassioned statement concerning the times we live in, addressed to his young children. Through emotionally expressive compositions performed by a stellar ensemble, with his own narration interspersed between, it's both a loving message passed down from father to children as well as a profound and deeply felt plea for togetherness and empathy.
