The Staves

All Now emerges from a period of chaos for the band that was followed by a period of enforced quiet. The Staves released their third album, Good Woman, in February 2021; it was an album of love and loss, written during a disconcerting period of turmoil and pain. “There was a delayed reaction to trauma and these big changes out of your control,” says Jess of the period that came after Good Woman, as the band—like the rest of us—were forced to sit with their thoughts.The Staveley-Taylors were also still processing the death of their mother and other seismic changes: Emily took a backseat on this album (while still contributing vocals on a handful of tracks) to focus on motherhood, while Camilla reckoned with her own mental and physical health issues, including chronic pain and a series of operations due to endometriosis, which began to take an increasing toll.Struggling after two years of deep solitude and pain following the release of Good Woman, The Staves did what they know how to do best: they got back to writing with the idea of going back to basics and focusing almost solely on each other and their guitars as a starting point.It began with Jess, navigating this new landscape by harnessing her creativity on her own, at first in the studio in Hackney at the end of 2022, then slowly luring Camilla back to the next chapter of The Staves, before reaching out to Congleton, who the band had worked with on Good Woman.

The Staves are an English folk rock trio of sisters Jessica, Camilla and Emily Staveley-Taylor from Watford, Hertfordshire, England. The Staves began performing together at open-mic nights in Watford hosted by a local pub, The Horns. Originally performing as The Staveley-Taylors, the trio later changed their name to The Staves. The group appeared on the Tom Jones album Praise and Blame, released in July 2010. They supported Mt. Desolation on their UK tour in autumn 2010. Jessica Staveley-Taylor also performed as part of Mt. Desolation and provided vocals for their eponymous album. The Staves released the Live at Cecil Sharp House EP and the Mexico EP in 2011, and appeared on Fionn Regan's third studio album, 100 Acres of Sycamore.

Another great compilation from Rhino, this two-disc set contains some of the best acoustic music from some of the biggest artists out there, plenty of my favourites are represented with a track, but there were also a handful that were still new to me. That's the joy of compilations for me, you are able to discover a lot of talent through buying them.
It's a nice mix of old and new, with alternative versions used when needed, for example the acoustic versions of Bruno Mars' 'Grenade', James Blunt's '1973', 'Smile' by Lily Allen, the iTunes session of Lykke Li's 'I Follow Rivers', and a great live & acoustic performance from Scotland's finest young crooner Paolo Nutini on 'Last Request'.
This is a very appealing playlist of acoustic music. The only downside was that when I went to burn the CDs onto my laptop, the song titles and artist names couldn't be found, so I had to write them in myself. Well, copy and paste from this Amazon page, but still tedious and time consuming all the same.

Toothless is Ed Nash, who plays bass in Crouch End electro-janglers Bombay Bicycle Club and should maybe claim a promotion on the basis of this enjoyable side-project. His classically inflected lyrics, finger-picked guitars and darkly playful sense of melody draw on the English psych traditions of Syd Barrett, Badly Drawn Boy, Simian, etc. Sisyphus works as a one-man duet, its dual melodies charmingly jostling for position; on You Thought I Was Your Friend, the phased drums and buzzing bass push us into more unsettling climes, the chorus hook offering: “I want to hurt you”. There’s a cutesy evasiveness to his vocals, multiply-tracked and mixed low as if to preclude intimacy – but the more dulcet moments (such as The Midas Touch, a duet with Tom Fleming of The Staves) can still cast a spell. The shadowy harmonies of Sun’s Midlife Crisis - “Every day must pass away” - sound uncannily like the moment a summer evening turns dark and cold and the games must be packed away.

Above the album worked the Rhino '100 Greatest Indie: The Best Guitar Pop Rock ', and his release took place on December 2019. The album has got 100 songs with a total duration of more than an hour. A compilation is a compilation of original music.
