Elvis Presley belongs on the short list of artists who changed the course of popular music in the 20th century. He may not have invented rock & roll, but he was indisputably its first rock star, a singer whose charisma was tightly intertwined with his natural talent for a combination that seemed combustible, sexy, and dangerous when Presley seized the imagination of America with four successive number one singles in 1956. He spent the next two decades near the top of the charts, weathering changes in fashion, self-inflicted missteps, and comebacks as his music expanded and evolved.

There have been a lot of Sun compilations over the years; this three-CD, 74-song compilation strikes the medium ground between abridged single-disc highlights and overkill ten-album box sets. What this means is that you get virtually all the key sides of this vastly influential blues, country, and rockabilly label, including the biggest Sun hits cut by Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, and Roy Orbison. There's also a lot of the pioneering electric blues cut by label head Sam Phillips before he made rockabilly Sun's focus, including sides by Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Rufus Thomas, Junior Parker, and James Cotton. Then there are the interesting small hits and flops by minor rockabilly figures like Warren Smith, Billy Lee Riley, Malcolm Yelvington, Onie Wheeler, and Carl Mann…

What could be more '70s than the '50s hey? 'American Graffiti,' 'Happy Days,' 'Grease.' The style and the look of the '50s and early '60s were massive in the '70s, and Australia had its own piece of the action with Sydney's Ol'55, who burst out of the gate with their 1976 debut album 'Take It Greasy.' That album would achieve multi-platinum sales for the band and their label Mushroom and set them up as one of the most popular Australian bands of the late '70s and early '80s.

Johnny Burnette is a legend to many rock & roll fans, but his legend is one that is not widely known, since his groundbreaking rockabilly sides of the late '50s weren't hits outside of the South and the hits that he had in the early '60s were as a sweet, slick teen idol. "You're Sixteen" is a long way away from the wild, careening rockabilly of "The Train Kept a-Rollin'," the best-known song that Burnette and the Rock & Roll Trio recorded for Coral Records during the '50s.
