Compiling the "Nuggets From The Golden State" series has been a lot of fun and a true labour of love, but right from the start there's one volume I've been itching to put together: 'The Berkeley EPs'. A compilation of four prized artefacts from the mid-1960s West Coast rock renaissance, this CD hopes to make a case for the town of Berkeley as the real birthplace of psychedelic music.People in the UK tend to view the whole of the Bay Area as just "San Francisco" whereas Berkeley, a twenty minute drive east across the Bay Bridge, is a completely separate area, both geographically and intellectually. And it shows.

After Houston-based International Artists Records enjoyed unexpected commercial success with one of the most eccentric bands to emerge from the State of Texas, the 13th Floor Elevators, the label's proprietors presumably set out to find some folks who were even weirder, and they found a band that fit the bill in the Red Crayola. The group's 1967 debut album, The Parable of Arable Land, actually documents the work of two different groups; the Red Crayola themselves conjure up a sound that's part psychedelia, part garage punk, and partly some sort of experimental rock that would not truly make itself known until many years down the road, and they generate an impressively freaked-out energy on deliberately primitive numbers like "War Sucks" and "Hurricane Fighter Plane." Six of the 12 tracks on The Parable of Arable Land are devoted to the Red Crayola; the rest find the three members of the group collaborating with 45 friends, acquaintances, and fellow travelers credited as "the Familiar Ugly."

Third EP Songs from the Psychedelic Time Clock follows with religious reworkings of the early garage and '60s psych sound. Beginning with the loving homage to the genre "The Little Record Store Just Around the Corner," the band rides a Seeds/Count Five-inspired riff and rumble while vocalist/songwriter Kevin Kinney sings about finding psychedelic records in the welcoming arms of the local record shop…

The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas, which existed from 1965 to 1969. During their career, the band released four LPs and seven 45s for the International Artists record label. This 4x discs set contains all four of the original Elevators albums that were released on the International Artists label from 1966 to 1968, remastered and collected in a clam box with extensive new notes by band expert Paul Drummond. In addition to the stereo versions of the three 'studio' albums, which were remastered and remixed from the original tapes in 2007 by the original producer Walt Andrus, the set also includes a completely new mix of 1968's "Live" album, minimizing the fake applause that was added to the recordings and removing glitches that blighted previous versions.

The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is the debut studio album by the 13th Floor Elevators. The album's sound, featuring elements of psychedelia, hard rock, garage rock, folk, and blues, is notable for its use of the electric jug, as featured on the band's only hit, "You're Gonna Miss Me", which reached number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Tried to Hide" as a B-side. Another single from the album, "Reverberation (Doubt)", reached number 129 on the Billboard's Bubbling Under chart.
