Over the decades, many musicians from the African-American ethnic group have turned to Africa for musical inspiration. For some, it was to prove only a partial or brief flirtation, while others embraced the tonal and rhythmic elements the continent’s music had to offer on a more serious basis. We have collected the best of the latter here. The American musicians assembled on this compilation were certainly not the only ones to mine the inspirational qualities of African music in the Fifties and Sixties but these were the principal players who chose to add a little colour and ethnicity to their repertoire.

Short-lived South African jazz group that evolved from the Jazz In Africa session. A landmark 1959 recording session organized by John Mehagan (a visiting US pianist) that featured local musicians Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Kippie Moeketsi. When Mehagan returned to the USA the remaining members recruited pianist Dollar Brand and named themselves the Jazz Epistles. They recorded one well-received album, gave an acclaimed performance at the Gold Castle National Jazz Festival and then split up (Brand moving to Switzerland, Masekela and Gwangwa to the USA). Their album was deleted after a very limited initial release and became much sought after by fans of South African jazz.

Adolph Johannes Brand was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1934. He adopted the stage name Dollar Brand for his first few recordings, before changing his name to Abdullah Ibrahim on his conversion to Islam in 1968. The recording dates of both these sets are from that brief period between the burst of South African jazz and when Ibrahim and fellow musicians fled apartheid in 1962.

Born in South Africa in 1939, flugelhorn, trumpet, and cornet virtuoso Hugh Masekela was inspired by American jazz as a young boy and served an extensive apprenticeship with some of his homeland's musical giants. In 1959, he and pianist Dollar Brand (aka Abdullah Ibrahim) formed the legendary Jazz Epistles, but after a brutal government crackdown on political opposition, Masekela and a host of other artists and intellectuals fled the country. A long but fruitful period followed, during which he worked with Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Harry Belefonte, Miriam Makeba (his ex-wife), Herb Alpert, and Paul Simon, consolidating his reputation abroad.

This High Note Jaki Byard date titled Sunshine of My Soul is not a reissue of the 1967 issue by Prestige. In fact, it was recorded by Todd Barkan in 1978 at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco and produced for release on compact disc by Joe Fields. This is Byard solo, working magic as few other pianists have ever been able to and embodying most of the jazz tradition in his set.
