Microphones in 2020 is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band the Microphones. It is the Microphones' first release in 17 years, following 2003's Mount Eerie. It was released on August 7, 2020, on frontman Phil Elverum's record label P.W. Elverum & Sun. Microphones in 2020 is a concept album comprised of one 44-minute song describing Elverum's life and musical career. The album was written and recorded entirely by Elverum. Its release was accompanied by a short film consisting of 761 printed photos taken by Elverum, which Elverum described as "lyric video…a slideshow, a powerpoint presentation, a flip book and a documentary". Upon its announcement, fans and music publications were interested by the fact that the album was credited to the Microphones and not to Mount Eerie, under which name Elverum had released most of his music since 2004. The album received widespread critical acclaim.

It took 53 years, but now, at last, The Beatles’ final public performance can be heard – with all the songs complete and uninterrupted. True, a split-screen sequence of the remarkable event on January 30, 1969, was the climax of Peter Jackson’s epic Get Back trilogy. But the film’s fascinating cutaways to the drama unfolding at ground level meant the music on the roof was not always in the foreground. Finally, a new mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell presents virtually every second from the two reels of tape containing the rooftop session. Listening to this historic audio is a thrilling experience. Although no one knew at the time, this was The Beatles’ last gig. But it’s a perfect live finale – original, humorous and unprecedented: elements that are forever associated with The Beatles.

Some years ago Austrian radio ORF started a series of recordings with polyphony from the renaissance on its own label. The ensemble The Sound and the Fury has recorded music by well-known masters like Nicolas Gombert, Pierre de la Rue and Johannes Ockeghem. But they have also paid attention to some forgotten composers of the 15th century. One of them is Guillaume Faugues. As so often there is quite a difference between his reputation in his own time and in modern times. It is very likely nothing of his oeuvre has ever been recorded before.

Saramaccan Sound (Suriname) are a brother duo - Dwight Sampie and Robert Jabini - who write and perform flowing acoustic songs sung in Saramaccan, the language from the Americas with the most African elements. Their debut album was recorded in situ by Grammy winner Ian Brennan (Parchman Prison Prayer, Ustad Saami, The Good Ones) along a remote riverside in the Amazon region of Suriname. The lyrics are topical and reference everyday strife such as the rising tides and floods in the area due to global warming.

In July 2018 The Rank Outsiders assembled at Apollo Bay’s, House Of Rock studios to cut the wax on this collection of bluesy, rootsy, rag-tag rock’n’roll. On display was a sterling collection of vintage guitars, amps, basses, and drums, all ready to provide the ear candy for the awaiting microphones. We had hammered these tunes into shape during plenty of late nights in rehearsal rooms and gigs in Victoria’s great South West.

This 53-CD set is more than the sum of its parts. While not all the performances and recordings are top-notch, the overall quality is very high and as a historical overview of a label known for its sonic as well as musical merits, it's full of treasures. The Mercury sound at its best is vivid and still sounds remarkable and many of these recordings - such as the marches, show tunes and orchestral showpieces conducted by Frederic Fennell - demonstrate this amply. But it's not all lollipops by any means.
