"The Joy Of Flying" is a Jazz fusion album by Tony Williams. Although it was recorded at the end of The Tony Williams Lifetime years, it is considered a solo album. It includes three duets, two with Jan Hammer and one with Cecil Taylor, and three different quartets. The first quartet features Jan Hammer again along with George Benson and Paul Jackson on two songs. The second quartet has veterans Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and Tom Scott also for two songs.

This Mosaic edition of Tony`s later Blue Note years w/ his postbop band (1985 - 1992) compiles 5 cd`s - 'Foreign Intrigue','Civilization','Angel Street','Native Heart' and 'The Story Of Neptune', and while it may seem pricey, it`s now cheaper to buy this box than to purchase the titles individually, as they have risen since his passing (2/23/1997). This was a great band and showcased Tony`s skills as a composer as well as reaffirming his status as the most defining drummer in Jazz. It clearly indicates how strong an influence Art Blakey`s band was to Tony`s early development (he used to sit in w/ Art`s band when he was only 15 years old when Blakey`s group played in Boston, Tony`s hometown).

This album is … excellent! This killer shuffle on "Going Far" is just great. Jan Hammer does a great job too. The second song "Hip Skip" is an awesome funky song which has Jan Hammer, George Benson, funky bassist Paul Jackson, Michael Brecker and Ralph McDonald. "Hittin on 6" is funky too and has Herbie and Stanley playin'. Now comes the hard-rock part of the album: "Open Fire" - a real hard rockin' song. My favorite song( out of 7 killer cuts)is "Tony" by Stanley Clarke. Gotta love Herbie's playing and Tony's tight grooves.. "ERIS" is another song which has Jan Hammer doing Keyboards and all synths and Tony's awesome drumming - but now it's not funky like on "Going far", now its rocking. Great playing - thayt isy Tony. "Coming Home" is a beatiful song. The only song I couldn't get into is the last one, "Morgan's Motion", which has Tony and Cecil Taylor doing a duo.

Drummer Tony Williams died suddenly, and tragically, in early 1997. His death struck hard, eliminating one of jazz rhythm's sharpest innovators since the 1950s. Williams first made his brilliance clear in the second great Miles Davis Quintet of the early 1960s. He whirled like mad later, especially with his own jazz-rock fusion trio Lifetime. In between, he created rhythmic vapor trails behind Miles and increased the wobbly rhythmic ratio with artists like Eric Dolphy. Sadly, in Young at Heart, we have his final recording.

The mercurial Tony Williams assembled a dream line-up of superb session men bassist Tony Newton and keyboardist Alan Pasqua but it's with the addition of guitarist Allan Holdsworth that the line-up featured a musician that not only brought this band together and it also brought in a member that was equally as innovative and extraordinary gifted as Tony…

Arc of Testimony is one of the last recordings to feature legendary drummer Tony Williams, and its bold, experimental textures are a fitting epitaph to his career. Arcana was formed by bassist/producer Bill Laswell with the intention of exploring the outer reaches of fusion, ambient and free jazz. Like the group's debut, Last Wave (released only in Japan), Arc of the Testimony is a freewheeling, unpredictable blend of electronic and acoustic sounds.

Civilization features originals by Williams that heavily feature commanding drums, on the album the rest of the quintet plays to keep up with the vivacious drummer.

Influential drummer Tony Williams recorded "Foreign Intrigue" in 1985 for the relaunched Blue Note label with pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter Wallace Roney, who would both remain with Williams for the next few years in his quintet. Foreign Intrigue, featuring modern electronic instruments such as drum machines and synthesizers, also highlights the performances of veteran musicians Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Ron Carter on bass.
