Arvo Pärt: The Very Best of Arvo Pärt (2010)  Music

Arvo Pärt: The Very Best of Arvo Pärt (2010)

For newcomers to the work of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, this generous two-disc collection of performances from EMI's archive would be a good place to start exploring. The authoritative Pärt performances would probably be the premiere releases on ECM, produced by Manfred Eicher, but these performances are all of a very high quality and there is a handful of works that ECM has never recorded. Pärt's most famous works are here; there are three versions each of the ever-popular Fratres (for violin and piano, string orchestra and harp, and string quartet) and Summa (for mixed voices, string orchestra, and string quartet), as well as the version of Spiegel in Spiegel for violin and piano, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten for string orchestra and bell, and the concerto for two violins and prepared piano, Tabula rasa.

Aerosmith greatest-hits compilations can be sorted into three categories: ones that compile the band's 1970s prime with Columbia Records (of which Greatest Hits [1980] and Gems [1988] are the benchmarks, especially the former); ones that compile the band's subsequent run with Geffen Records (Big Ones [1994]); and ones that ostensibly span both eras via cross-licensing (O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits [2002]). Devil's Got a New Disguise falls into the final category, as it spans Aerosmith's entire career to date, from "Dream On" and "Mama Kin" (from the band's 1973 eponymous debut) to a pair of new studio recordings ("Sedona Sunrise" and "Devil's Got a New Disguise")…

The Very Best of… Sting & The Police is a compilation album issued by Sting, and released by A&M Records in 1997. Conceived at the time when Sting had just released his fifth solo effort, Mercury Falling (hence equalling his personal tally with the one of The Police), the album mixes a selection of the Sting's Police-era songs with later hits recorded under his own name. It originally featured one new track, a remix of the 1978 song "Roxanne" by rap artist Sean "Puffy" Combs. The album was reissued in 1998 by PolyGram International with "Russians" removed and 3 additional tracks, "Seven Days", "Fragile", and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", being added.

There have been plenty of single-disc Doobie Brothers collections released over the years. There have been two-part vinyl Best of the Doobies, there have been budget-line collections, and there have been OK overviews as well as excellent generous discs with all the big hits. There's even been a comprehensive four-disc box, but what there hasn't been is a double-disc set – something that falls between the conciseness of 2001's terrific Greatest Hits (the first CD to contain all the big hits on one CD) and 1999's four-disc Long Train Runnin' 1970-2000. That's what 2007's The Very Best of the Doobie Brothers is, a double-disc helping of the Doobies' biggest songs from "Listen to the Music" to "The Doctor."

2016 two CD collection. Formed in Dundee and Edinburgh, Scotland in 1976 by Billy MacKenzie and Alan Rankine, The Associates made some of the most esoteric and lavish 'pop' music of their time while gleefully wreaking havoc with industry expectations - refusing to play by any rules. This anthology features their biggest hits 'Party Fears Two' and 'Club Country', three previously unreleased tracks, their cover versions of David Bowie's 'Boys Keep Swinging', 'Love Hangover' and the fateful 'Gloomy Sunday', plus 21 other songs showcasing their musical inventiveness and MacKenzie's incredible voice.

Although they only attained the huge success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys for a short time in the mid-'60s, time has judged the Byrds to be nearly as influential as those groups in the long run. They were not solely responsible for devising folk-rock, but they were certainly more responsible than any other single act (Dylan included) for melding the innovations and energy of the British Invasion with the best lyrical and musical elements of contemporary folk music. The jangling, 12-string guitar sound of leader Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was permanently absorbed into the vocabulary of rock. They also played a vital role in pioneering psychedelic rock and country-rock, the unifying element being their angelic harmonies and restless eclecticism…

This overview of soulful Scottish singer/songwriter Frankie Miller features his three big hits "Darlin'," "Be Good to Yourself," and "Caledonia," as well as key album cuts like "Highlife/Brickyard Blues" and "I Can't Change It." Miller never found the same amount of success overseas as he did in his native U.K., but his raspy brand of Rod Stewart, Tom Waits and Bob Seger-infused pub rock, blue-eyed soul, and R&B earned him a loyal following that will covet this fine collection of impassioned '70s goodness.

2011 two CD collection from the British duo. From the late '80s, The Beloved spent a decade enjoying great success that wholeheartedly embraced dance music and played their part in heralding the acid age. After first emerging with the ambient-styled single 'The Sun Rising, The Beloved then scored an international hit with 'Hello', a bubbling techno exercise which name-checked many of the group's influences. The group enjoyed chart success on no fewer than 11 occasions, cracking the Top 10 with 1993 hit 'Sweet Harmony' and causing a media-stir with a rather risqu‚ video. The track featured on the highly successful album Conscience, just one of their four chart albums, and this collection features no fewer than 10 tracks from that smash hit album. 31 tracks total.
