The Wall

Shy law student Martin falls for his mysterious landlady, who lives next door behind a thin wall. While trying to find out if she's responsible for the disappearance of the previous tenant, Martin experiences the horror of his first love.

Against the Wall a.k.a. Quality of Life, as a true low-budget indie, is a remarkably polished film. Chronicling the lives of two Frisco graff writers (Vain and Heir) as their encounters with the law place strain on their friendship and ambitions, the movie takes a penetrating look at those involved in the underground graffiti movement, as well as their place in society. Despite the serious nature of the film, the movie has a lot of funny moments, which prevent it from being overbearing. The characters- artists at a crossroads- are complex and interesting, and a good balance, the more volatile Vain complementing the more level-headed Heir. Aesthetically, the cinematography, which mirrors the grittiness of the Frisco graff scene, is beautiful in its abrasiveness, and the soundtrack, featuring bay area emcees like Andre Nikatina and Top Ramen, helps set the mood. There's also some pretty ill fight scenes and the tags are top notch. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone interested in hip hop culture.

When the Turkish superstar leading man turned human rights activist, Guney was convicted for pro-Kurdish political activity and murder, by the Turkish military regime. Director/writer Guney's last film, Duvar (The Wall), was banned in Turkey for 17 years. The incarcerated teens organize and fight back, brutalize each other, exult over the smallest triumph, while joking, suffering and learning from the inhumanity they wallow in. The prison also separately houses men and women, many played by other Turkish expatriates.

Life's small maelstroms invade a family and those in their apartment building in this off-color comedy by Gyorgy Szomjas. After a young and lugubrious husband becomes exasperated with his boss, he decides to quit work and look for something more interesting. He finds it in a gorgeous new neighbor who makes him forget his married state. The unemployed husband starts up his own service as a wall driller for people who need to hang up heavy pictures and other objects. It is while working in that capacity that he gets to know his lovely neighbor in the biblical sense of the term. Meanwhile, prostitution is springing up as a means for new mothers home on leave to add to the family coffers. In general, the architecturally dull housing block has some pretty wild characters living behind its cement block walls.
