The Wavelet Transform

Yet another book on wavelets. There are many books on wavelets available, written for readers with different backgrounds. But the topic is becoming ever more important in mainstream signal processing, since the new JPEG2000 standard is based on wavelet techniques. Wavelet techniques are also impor­ tant in the MPEG-4 standard. So we thought that there might be room for yet another book on wavelets. This one is limited in scope, since it only covers the discrete wavelet trans­ form, which is central in modern digital signal processing.

Wavelet methods have recently undergone a rapid period of development with important implications for a number of disciplines including statistics. This book has three main objectives: (i) providing an introduction to wavelets and their uses in statistics; (ii) acting as a quick and broad reference to many developments in the area; (iii) interspersing R code that enables the reader to learn the methods, to carry out their own analyses, and further develop their own ideas. The book code is designed to work with the freeware R package WaveThresh4, but the book can be read independently of R.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of signal and image denoising techniques. It also examines and compares the performance of several innovative denoising approaches involving the use of mathematical tools such as wavelets, deep learning, minimum mean square error, and more.

This textbook for a one semester introductory course in digital signal processing for senior undergraduate and first year graduate students in electrical and computer engineering departments is concise, highly readable, and yet provides comprehensive coverage of the topic. Each new topic is presented with examples and figures. The highly mathematical content of the topic is presented lucidly to make the learning the subject easier. Practical aspects of the subject are clearly indicated so that the student can apply the principles in real applications. Matlab programs for FIR filter design are provided as supplementary material online

This book presents the basic concepts of functional analysis, wavelet analysis and thresholding. It begins with an elementary chapter on preliminaries such as basic concepts of functional analysis, a brief tour of the wavelet transform, Haar scaling functions and function space, wavelets, symlets wavelets and coiflets wavelets. In turn, Chapters 2 and 3 address the construction of wavelet packets, selected results on wavelet packets, band-limited wavelet packets, characterisations of wavelet packets, multiresolution analysis (MRA) wavelet packets, pointwise convergence, the convergence of wavelet packet series and convolution bounds. Chapter 4 discusses characterisations of function spaces like Lebesgue spaces, Hardy spaces and Sobolev spaces in terms of wavelet packets, while Chapter 5 is devoted to applications of wavelets and wavelet packets in speech denoising and biomedical signals. In closing, Chapter 6 highlights applications of wavelets and wavelet packets in image denoising.
