The Well Tempered Clavier

Following on from his critically-acclaimed recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Trio Sonatas for Organ, Robert Costin has recorded both books of The Well-Tempered Clavier. He has chosen to perform these extraordinary works on the organ of Trinity College, Cambridge. The result is a performance of technical brilliance, which listeners will have come to expect from this wonderful musician, and also a chance to hear this instrument in all its glory as it is taken through the 48 preludes and fugues. Costin’s performance exudes breathtaking dexterity and a wonderful variety of color. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear these landmark compositions performed by a virtuoso on an incredible instrument.

Dantone opens book two with an exceptionally tender interpretation of the first prelude; this work is often played too quickly, too aggressively, but Danton is very humble in his performance of this piece, he lets the music take over rather than directing it too rigidly. His performance of the C sharp major prelude is a gem - his ornamentation is fresh and delightful, his phrasing subtle and inventive. He takes this piece and gives it new life, infusing it with joy and happiness. Even the following fugue takes on this tone, in spite of the radical difference between the two pieces.
