Welcome back to the world of Squeeze, a world where previous visitors will find much that is both reassuringly familiar and intriguingly different. A new album, ‘The Knowledge’, offers up another dozen examples of high quality Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook song craft, and is the perfect curtain-raiser for a massive UK, US & Australian tour. Two years on from the critically acclaimed Top 20 success of ‘Cradle To The Grave’ (the band’s first set of new songs this century), ‘The Knowledge’ sees our heroes broaden their musical canvas, as evident on the opening ‘Innocence In Paradise’ with its pedal steel and cinematic atmosphere evoking images of the mythical western. But don’t be wrong-footed by that curveball compass point, because Squeeze are still very much part of the fabric of South London.

Lawnmower Deth were an interesting English thrash metal band of the late 1980s and early 1990s, who parodied the genre and recorded three-and-a-half studio albums…

At 21 years old, after a brief stint with a punk band, Jonn Savannah (known as Don Snow) auditioned to become a founder member of the Sinceros, who signed a world-wide deal with Epic Records and released two critically acclaimed albums. During this time Jonn also played with Lene Lovich on the second Stiff Records Tour. After the Sinceros split up he embarked on a UK and American tour with Bill Nelson and the Practical Dreamers. Jonn then joined Squeeze and worked on their album Sweets from a Stranger. While Squeeze were taking a break Jonn co-produced 25 Years - a self-penned single, quickly picked up by Metronome Records in Germany and released all over Europe under the name of The Catch.

Sequestered in Kentish Town to record an album with Hendrix / Slade producer Chas Chandler, in the spring of 1971 exiled American band Eggs Over Easy persuaded the landlord of local pub The Tally Ho to let them perform at the venue. Though the band were back in America by the end of the year, they inadvertently became the catalysts that sparked the pub rock revolution, with the likes of Brinsley Schwarz, Ducks Deluxe and Bees Make Honey playing a burgeoning circuit that included The Kensington in Russell Gardens, The Lord Nelson on Holloway Road and The Nashville in West Kensington.b Surrender To The Rhythm charts the origins and development of the London pub rock scene throughout the Seventies, featuring all of the aforementioned bands as well as such key names as Dr. Feelgood, Ace, Kilburn and The High Roads, Dave Edmunds, Graham Parker and Elvis Costello. We follow the scene into the late Seventies and the Stiff / punk era with the arrival of new, younger blood that included Eddie and The Hot Rods, The 101’ers, The Jam and Squeeze.
