Juxtaposing ’60s and ’70s news snippets, band interviews, and concert footage, director Daniel E. Meza brilliantly relates how racism and the La Raza movement forged Latin rock. In the case of El Chicano, the cultural strife inspired music of great joy. “We were in the thick of it,” says bassist Fred Sanchez, “because [Chicano-power organizers] were the people who hired El Chicano. But we contributed by putting positive stuff out there music and happiness.”This is a bold story beautifully and sometimes painfully".

Instrumental Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Early Pop/Rock

The most consistently enticing disc in the Rock Instrumental Classics series, this is both a great party and driving record and a window on the rhythms that powered soul music in the '60s (and early '70s, in two cases). In addition to some obvious choices (the four Booker T. & the MG's tracks, the Mar-Keys' "Last Night"), it also offers some left-field picks, such as the varied approaches to Latin music offered by Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and El Chicano. The stock of virtuoso performances here is all but endless: the bass-and-drums breakdown on Cliff Nobles and Co.'s "The Horse," the glinting guitar solo on the Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger," Hugh Masekela's questing trumpet on "Grazing in the Grass".

The 12th studio album from Ry Cooder was his first concept album and historical album telling the story of Chavez Ravine. The Mexican-American community was demolished in the '50s in order to make way for public housing. That housing was never built and, instead, the Brooklyn Dodgers stadium was erected on that site when they moved to L.A.
