Time is the ninth studio album by English rock band Electric Light Orchestra. It topped the UK Albums Chart for two weeks. Time is a concept album written about a man from the 1980s who is taken to the year 2095, where he is confronted by the dichotomy between technological advancement and a longing for past romance. Time is a work of synth-pop that combines elements from 1950s music, new wave, reggae, rockabilly, the Beatles, Phil Spector and the Shadows. The album signalled a departure from the band's sound by emphasising electronics over its usual orchestra.

This triple-CD set devoted to Alma Cogan won't supplant the four-disc set issued a couple of years earlier by EMI, but it does contain a different breakdown of her music with a couple of tracks – most notably, her rendition of the Beatles' "Help!" – that aren't on the larger set. Each disc is broken down chronologically, into "The Fifties," "The Sixties," and "The Standards," respectively, and while John Lennon might've been amused by it, Paul McCartney will probably be downright impressed that the Beatles songs that Cogan – a beloved personal friend of the band, but a half-generation older and out of a completely different performing tradition – embraced during the final phase of her career, are presented on that last disc, alongside the work of George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Arthur Freed, and Nacio Herb Brown; as Cogan herself might've quipped, all "jolly good company."

Time was the last truly great album from the Electric Light Orchestra, released as their world-conquering fame was starting to ebb. A concept album (a brave undertaking in 1981), Time has a space-age theme and is set at the end of the 21st century. What's most remarkable is how all this science-fiction silliness is salvaged by the exuberant playing. "Yours Truly, 2095" uses a number of ELO's hallmarks–a catchy synth riff, sweeping strings, and over-the-top production–to tell a tale of a man in love with a robot; the album's highlight, it should have been a hit single. The epic "Twilight" and "Hold on Tight"–which practically bounces along like an overexcited puppy–also stand among ELO's finest works. Moreover, critical darlings Grandaddy have frequently stated the album influenced their excellent Sophtware Slump, evidence that this futuristic album was itself years ahead of its time. ~ Robert Burrow

The ambitious and irresistible fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements and futuristic iconography carried Electric Light Orchestra to massive commercial success throughout the 1970s, revived in the second half of the 2000s through a series of commercials. for TV. ELO was formed in Birmingham, England, in the fall of 1970, from the ashes of eccentric pop-art group the Move, bringing together frontman Roy Wood, guitarist / songwriter Jeff Lynne, bassist Rick Price, and drummer Bev Bevan. Announcing their intention to "pick up where 'I Am the Walrus' left off," the quartet seeks to embellish their engaging melodic rock with classic flourishes.
