The Shape of Water is a science fiction fairy tale written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones. It’s an odd mishmash of a film – it’s one part romantic drama, one part monster movie, one part spy thriller, and it explores additional themes that range from one character’s closeted homosexuality to another’s love of classic Hollywood musicals – but somehow it all works beautifully. Hawkins plays Elisa, a shy mute woman who works as a cleaner on the night shift at a military research facility in the 1960s.

This series helps teachers demystify physics by showing students what it looks like. Field trips to hot-air balloon events, symphony concerts, bicycle shops, and other locales make complex concepts more accessible. Inventive computer graphics illustrate abstract concepts such as time, force, and capacitance, while historical re-enactments of the studies of Newton, Leibniz, Maxwell, and others trace the evolution of theories.

Brian de Palma’s The Untouchables was released to considerable acclaim in 1987 and is probably his most well-regarded film. With rising star Kevin Costner perfect as Eliot Ness, Robert de Niro hamming it up to high heaven as Al Capone and an Oscar-winning Sean Connery providing brilliant support as Jim Malone, the film is a great piece of entertainment. De Palma has always believed that music has a very important role to play in a film and as such, the scores for his films tend to be striking and very much at the forefront; and he’s worked with some wonderful composers including Bernard Herrmann, Pino Donaggio, John Williams, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Danny Elfman and others. On three occasions, he worked with the great Ennio Morricone.

Jerry Goldsmith’s 1993 score for Twentieth Century-Fox’s remake of The Vanishing was one of the composer’s very rare ‘90s scores to go without an album release. Goldsmith’s score is both intense and beautiful, while steeped in psychological intrigue. It is stylistically similar to the composer’s brilliant work on Basic Instinct but is as unique as ever for Goldsmith and includes a rare exploration in jazz as the composer wraps up his score with a jazz trio. GoldsmithIn this riveting, tension-filled psychological thriller, a young woman (Sandra Bullock) mysteriously disappears, sending her boyfriend, Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland), on a years-long quest to find her. Not even a new love (Nancy Travis) can keep him from his obsessive search. All the while, the calculating psychopath (Jeff Bridges) who kidnapped his girlfriend stalks Jeff, ultimately taking him through the exact same steps that led to the crime. In order to find out what happened, Jeff must put his own life in the hands of this devious stranger.
