No artist of the rock & roll era compares to singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. He was the rare combination of a visionary pop conceptualist and master musician who could capture the sounds he imagined. This quality fueled his remarkable success throughout the 1980s, a decade in which he authored a string of nine gold, platinum, or multi-platinum albums that included 1999 (1982), Purple Rain (1984), and Sign 'o' the Times (1987). Ideas came to Prince so quickly that they couldn't be contained on his own records. He masterminded albums by the Time and Sheila E. and gave away hit songs to the Bangles and Sheena Easton, shaping the sound of popular music in the process.

By then they’d established the art of singing vocal harmony in every genre of American pop, and gone far beyond the country’s borders. Jean Buzelin and Jean-Paul Ricard have gone deep into jazz, pop and soul material for this set, and chosen the most representative groups that sublimed the songs of America’s girl singers.

Alone among all the groups to emerge from the post-punk era, U2 channeled their yen for moody, experimental aural textures into clearly defined rock anthems and ballads – songs that sounded majestic yet felt personal. Much of that sense of intimacy can be attributed to Bono, a lead singer who gravitates toward grand gestures yet remains grounded by his belief in humanity and the revolutionary power of rock & roll.

"Live Concert At The Forum" is the 2nd live album by American singer Barbra Streisand, released physically on October 1, 1972 by Columbia Records. Produced by long-time collaborator Richard Perry, it was recorded at The Forum in Inglewood, part of Greater Los Angeles, on April 15, 1972, during Four for McGovern, a concert held in benefit for George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign. In the United States, the album debuted at #100 on the Billboard 200 for the week ending November 18, 1972. On January 6 of the following year, "Live Concert At The Forum" peaked at #19. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the live album Gold for shipments upwards of 500,000 sales on February 13, 1973 and upgraded the certification to Platinum for shipments of one million on November 21, 1986.

"Curtain Time" was originally issued on vinyl in 1968, as MCA/Universal was trying to make every last penny they could off the Jack Jones catalog that they acquired from Kapp. This CD features an excellent mix of showtunes that Jones recorded, and they're not all the predictable ones you've seen repeated in recent years for Greatest Hits collections. It's especially good to see titles from the Nelson Riddle and Billy May collaborations included here, since Jones gets far too little recognition for the legendary talent he worked with, and the amazing material he recorded, while such a very young vocalist with Kapp. For some of these songs, this is the first and only time they've been remastered for CD, so there's much worthwhile about this compilation, even if its price tag is rather steep.

These recordings for the Verve label, most under the direction of Roy’s great champion Norman Granz, began in 1951 soon after Roy’s return to the USA from europe.
