Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. McCoy Tyner’s Bon Voyage features his 1987 trio with Avery Sharpe and Louis Hayes in exciting form. Ever since he joined the John Coltrane Quartet in late-1960, McCoy Tyner has had his own distinctive voice on the piano. A master of modal jazz, Tyner developed his own chord voicings and percussive style. He was one of the major influences on other pianists by the time he left Coltrane in early 1966 and has led his own bands, usually trios, ever since. While his approach has not changed much since then, he has continued to grow within his own style and has made scores of high quality recordings while remaining a highly influential force.

This set covers the last two years of McCoy Tyner's tenure with Blue Note, beginning with the pianist's Expansions, the first album on which his own identity as a leader-composer-pianist came ringing through. With Woody Shaw, Gary Bartz, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter (on cello), Herbie Lewis and Freddie Waits, he fashioned a new sound, inspired by, but not mimicking his work with the John Coltrane Quartet. McCoy blended modality, Eastern music, African elements and spirituality into a music that was unmistakably his own.

McCoy Tyner's fourth studio album has a split personality, with three tracks featuring an intriguing sextet of all-stars, and the rest with his trusty trio, done eight months apart. Perhaps the tracks with bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Albert Heath were leftovers from a prior incomplete or aborted full session, but anything Tyner played in this period was precious. The larger ensemble recordings present trumpeter Thad Jones as ostensible co-leader, composer of one selection, and lead soloist. Tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and alto saxophonist Frank Strozier join forces with Thad Jones to make what some might deem an unlikely front-line triad, but effective enough considering their established individualism…

With his previous releases, pianist Peter Zak has focused on standards and works by a variety of jazz greats. This time around he focuses on McCoy Tyner, a veteran who has written a formidable array of compositions during his long career, though he has rarely, if ever, been the focus of a recorded tribute. Zak makes up for that oversight with this rewarding session, joined by his working trio consisting of longtime bassist Paul Gill and drummer Quincy Davis (the latter also appeared on Seed of Sin). Zak puts his own stamp on each piece, not merely trying to copy Tyner's style (which would be pointless), opening with a snappy take of "Blues on the Corner" that also features his sidemen.

As the title implies, this McCoy Tyner release is a low-key, after-hours affair. Far removed from the intensity of work with then-boss John Coltrane, Tyner stretches out on a fine mix of standards and bebop classics. The pianist, of course, always had his own fleet and rich way with ballads, in spite of the galvanizing marathon solos he became known for on live dates and his later experimental recordings with Coltrane. His ballad style is even touched with a bit of sentimentality, which thankfully is kept in check by a bevy of tasteful lines. Backed by the topnotch rhythm tandem of bassist Steve Davis and drummer Lex Humphries, Tyner finds the room to develop classic statements on highlights like Monk's "'Round Midnight," Ellington and Strayhorn's "Satin Doll," and Parker's "Star Eyes." On more easeful tracks like "For Heaven's Sake," Tyner utilizes his block chord approach to meditative and romantic effect…

There is music that seemingly possesses mystical qualities, transcending the temporal; qualities that musicians seek in order to reach higher planes in the subconscious and to communicate between collaborating sound makers and their listeners. Exploring these paths in music typically leads musicians to other like-minded individuals in search of the sublime.
