Time of The Wolf

Michael Haneke’s brilliant follow up to his critically acclaimed 'The Piano Teacher', which won the Grand Prix, Best Actress and Best Actor awards at Cannes in 2001, was presented at this year’s Cannes Festival, where it screened out of competition (Patrice Chéreau, the president of this year’s jury, stars in the film which made TIME OF THE WOLF ineligible for any award). Taking its title from Codex Regius, an ancient Germanic poem which describes the time before the ‘Ragnarok’ the end of the world, TIME OF THE WOLF is a dark and brutally compelling apocalyptic drama. Reuniting Haneke with Isabelle Huppert, his award-winning star from 'The Piano Teacher', TIME OF THE WOLF brings together an impressive ensemble cast, including the French speaking talents of Patrice Chéreau, Béatrice Dalle, Olivier Gourmet and Serge Riaboukine.

In an undefined time, the environment has been totally destroyed and now the water is contaminated and the animals have been burned. Georges Laurent travels with her wife Anne Laurent, their teenage daughter Eva and their son Ben from the city to their cabin in the countryside. On the arrival, they find that intruders have broken in the house, and one stranger kills George. Anne, Eva and Ben wander through the village asking for shelter and supplies for their acquaintances, but they refuse to help them. They reach an abandoned barn and spend the night inside. On the next morning, they meet a teenage boy and they walk together to a train station, where they find other survivors. Together, they wait for the train expecting to go to a better place in the middle of the chaos.

The Beast is a popular myth in France, albeit one rooted firmly in reality; somewhat surprisingly it is little known to the outside world, and perhaps incredibly it has never been made into a movie. Until now… Based on the true story of the Beast of the Gevaudan that terrorized France in the mid-XVIIIth century, the movie aims to tell first and explain afterwards…

Upon the death of his brother, Larry Talbot returns from America to his ancestral home in Wales. He visits a gypsy camp with village girl Jenny Williams, who is attacked by Bela, a gypsy who has turned into a werewolf. Larry kills the werewolf but is bitten during the fight. Bela's mother tells him that this will cause him to become a werewolf at each full moon. Larry confesses his plight to his unbelieving father, Sir John, who then joins the villagers in a hunt for the wolf. Larry, transformed by the full moon, heads for the forest and a fateful meeting with both Sir John and Gwen.

It's a struggle to summarise exactly what happens in the first half hour of Tian Zhuangzhuang's THE WARRIOR AND THE WOLF as it largely resembles a cobbled together mass of random sequences and unrelated footage from a frenzied shoot in the Mongolian wilderness, haphazardly lap dissolved back and forth into each other in a struggle to form a coherent narrative.

After witnessing the suicide bombing of a terrorist girl, Constable Kazuki Fuse becomes haunted by her image, and is forced to undergo retraining for his position in the Capital Police's Special Unit. However, unknown to him, he becomes a key player in a dispute between Capital and Local Police forces, as he finds himself increasingly involved with the sister of the very girl he saw die.
