To claim that the world has plenty of jazz piano trios on hand is no exaggeration: in recent years the basic classic combo has been experiencing a resounding revival. Yet a searching look among the trios on tour for the essence of this 'movement' - when it all comes down to audience acceptance and an unmistakable sound all it's own - the Tingvall Trio from Hamburg stands out on an international scale.. Martin Tingvall, pianist, hymn writer and the man who gave the band it's name, comments on the new compositions: "The songs always kick things off for us. With this album I've tried to compose in a way that points out new directions to us. We're testing new forms of expression, but at the same time we naturally want to be recognized as the Tingvall Trio. This time the music is clearly the boss, not the trio."
Following "Skagerrak" and "Norr" the Tingvall Trio finalizes their trilogy of Nordic stories with "Vattensaga". This 2009 release was recorded at the famous Arte Suono studio in Italy, best known for a series of great ECM recordings, the album boasts impeccable sound and the outstanding song-writing qualities of Martin Tingvall. Thirteen new musical pearls, featuring the sound paintings of drummer Jürgen Spiegel , the Mediterranean lightness of double bass player Omar Rodruguez Calvo and the dazzling piano playing of Martin Tingvall (here experiencing a Fazioli grand piano for the first time). A definite highlight of the trio’s recording history so far.
"Skagerrak" is the 2006 debut album of the acclaimed Tinvall Trio. An outstanding jazz piano trio! With a wonderful warm sound, captured by Iceland's genius at the mixing desk, Hrolfur Vagnsson, this album is a marvellous cross-section of finely spun jazz compositions such as "Medvind", Latino tracks like "Mustasch", rhythmically no-hold-barred ass-kickers like "Norrland Guld" and pensive fantasies like "God Natt". "Movie" instantly generates frame sequences in the mind, while with "Nimis" it's easy to imagine Will Downing constructing a relaxed pop number out of it.
The Tingvall Trio, led by pianist Martin Tingvall, are often compared to the legendary Esbjorn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.) due to the exuberant energy and clarity of their music, and because Martin is also Swedish. His trio partners are : Cuban bass-player Omar Rodriguez Calvo (who has worked with Roy Hargrove and Ramon Valle), and German drummer Jürgen Spiegel, who studied with Bill Stewart and Cindy Blackman. Martin was a student of Bobo Stenson. Recorded during their European tour, in autumn 2012, 78½ minutes of pure energy and invention, featuring tracks from their previous 4 albums.
Swedish composer Martin Tingvall's vivaciously rock-powered piano trio have a fanbase all over Europe, and in Dubai and South Africa, too. Now they are aiming to break Britain and the US, as the late Esbjorn Svensson's EST did. This album, their fourth, made the pop charts in Sweden and Germany, and features much of the catchily singable material they played on their UK debut last year.
