This Funky Thing is subtitled An Extremely Rare 70's Collection due to the source of most of these songs. Even though he is on the cover, James Brown is not on this compilation. Instead, these songs are made with the power to have the same majestic power as James Brown. This is a semi-legal comp, most of these are sourced from original vinyl records. Some of these songs are known as samples in hip-hop and dance songs. This was released by Goldmine/Soul Supply.

This collection of 23 obscure soul tracks, recorded for small time Detroit labels during the '60s, will intrigue collectors, but offers little for interest for casual fans. The Masqueraders, Tony Clarke, and Steve Mancha are the most familiar artists, notwithstanding Rosey Grier, the football player turned actor turned reverend, who also sang a bit. Two tracks by Jackey Beavers, who began with Johnny Bristol as Johnny & Jackie, are also on deck. If you like Detroit soul, you've probably been panting for this CD, but less devoted soul enthusiasts will not be especially excited by this.

One of the greatest sets we've seen from Goldmine in a long time – an excellent collection that really spans a variety of different soul styles, and which more than lives up to its "across the board" title! The mode here moves way past the standard Northern Soul of other Goldmine sets – into a realm that also includes sweet soul, modern soul, and mellow soul – with many great numbers from the 70s that have a warm, full approach to their sound.
